LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN
Magnetic tenor Vittorio
Grigolo takes on the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer of the title of
Offenbach's operatic masterpiece, in the Met's wild, kaleidoscopic production.
Hibla Gerzmava, Erin Morley and Christine Rice sing the three heroines - each
an idealized embodiment of some aspect of Hoffmann's desire. Thomas Hampson
portrays the shadowy Four Villains, and Yves Abel conducts the sparkling score
in a Bartlett Sher production.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
For those fans
whose operatic tastes happen to be rather conservative, this coming Saturday
(February 11) will offer several tantalizing listening choices. With the Met's
2016/2017 season of Saturday matinee broadcasts in full swing, it's no wonder
that Bizet's "Carmen" should pop up on the schedule. You can access
this Saturday's LIVE performance of Bizet's masterpiece on several internet
radio stations.
If it's
mainstream Italian opera you prefer, Verdi's "Il Trovatore" should do
nicely, and with tenor Roberto Alagna as Manrico + soprano Anna Netrebko as
Leonora, why not? The performance from the Vienna State Opera that took place
last Sunday (Feb. 5) is the one that you can hear on Radio 4 (the Netherlands).
Wagner
enthusiasts will get another chance to hear tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Walther,
when Swedish Radio re-broadcasts the May 16, 2016 performance from Munich of
Wagner's "Die Meistersinger."
Also from
Munich, Radio 3 (RAI) will be airing a LIVE performance on Sunday of Rossini's
"Semiramide" with Joyce DiDonato singing the title role. This one
will be receiving a LIVE video-stream later this month (Sunday, Feb. 26).
If Bellini's
"I Puritani" happens to be one of your favorites, you will actually
be getting TWO performances broadcast of this work in the days ahead. This
Friday evening at 7:25 pm, the Met will be giving us another of its FREE live
audio-streams, with soprano Diana Damrau featured in the role of Elvira.
Then on
Saturday, this same opera gets broadcast on German Radio, this time in a
performance (with a different cast) that took place in Stuttgart last summer
(July 8).
Enjoy!
DAVE
