Johan Botha is Otello

Verdi’s towering masterpiece, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy, makes its first Live in HD appearance. Semyon Bychkov conducts an extraordinary cast led by Johan Botha in the title role of the jealous Moor of Venice, opposite Renée Fleming in one of her greatest roles, Otello’s innocent wife Desdemona. OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

An interesting mix of the familiar and the relatively unfamiliar constitute some of the upcoming opera events to be heard (& seen) on the internet in the week ahead. Among the familiar items, there's Donizetti's ever-popular opera "L'Elisir d'Amore" as currently being performed in Paris and featuring tenor Roberto Alagna as Nemorino.

NPR is transmitting a broadcast from the Academy of Vocal Arts of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" with a cast of unknown but young and talented singers.

If Rossini's comic operas give you pleasure, you might want to tune in to ORF this Saturday for a performance of his comedy "La Gazzetta" from this past summer's Rossini Festival in Pesaro. This particular performance took place on August 11.

Swedish Radio once again brings us a LIVE performance from one of its esteemed opera houses. This time around it's Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" from the Malmo Opera.

A less familiar Russian opera appears on the schedule via German Opera, with a performance from Frankfurt of Glinka's "Life for the Tsar." This one took place this past October 25.

Then on Tuesday evening (November 17), the Met's free LIVE audio-stream features another performance of Berg's "Lulu" which, as many of you already know, will be the featured work in area movie theatres for the HD-transmission on November 21.

Please do keep in mind that on Sunday afternoon, you can watch, at no charge, a LIVE video-stream from Munich of Boito's "Mefistofele" with Rene Pape in the title role and with Joseph Calleja as Faust and Kristine Opolais as Margherita.
Elīna Garanča returning from several months of mourning her mother's death and Dmitri Hvorostovsky returning from a brain tumor performed a joint concert in Moscow last week, 10-29-15. Here are the results:       https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6OIuvNK_xs
Enjoy!
