OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Wagner enthusiasts will, no doubt, rejoice this coming Saturday (December 13) when the Met transmits a LIVE performance (in HD) of "Die Meistersinger" in select movie theatres. Tenor Johan Botha (Otello in recent years) will be taking on the role of Walther. As usual, if you can't attend the performance at the movies, you can listen to it on several internet radio stations (NPR, for instance).

On the other hand, if you simply can't wait for Saturday for your next "opera fix," you can always tune in to the Met's FREE live audio-stream tomorrow evening at 7:25 for a performance of "La Traviata."

And if one Verdi opera isn't enough, you can also listen to RAI for a performance on Friday (December 12) of "Il Trovatore" being broadcast LIVE from Naples.

Puccini fans need not feel left out on Saturday afternoon, thanks to Holland's Radio 4 which will be airing the audio of the current production in Amsterdam of "La Boheme."

Fans of the operas of Mozart will be able to tune in to one of the Master's most popular works: "Don Giovanni." This is a broadcast of the new production of the opera being performed in Brussels. Can't listen to the audio this Saturday? Never fear, because a free VIDEO of the opera will be available for viewing on the opera company's website, beginning on December 31. (Mark your calendars!)

A couple of rarities may be of interest to those of you who'd prefer to listen to an opera that neither Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, nor Wagner wrote. One of them is (strictly speaking) a "symphonic ode" -- according to the composer's definition of his work, the composer in question being Felicien David, & the work being broadcast on French Radio this Saturday is "Christoph Colomb" (written in 1847). It's a LIVE performance from Versailles.

On German Radio, you have a rare opportunity to listen to contemporary composer Peter Ronnefeld's chamber opera "Nachtausgabe" ("Night Edition") which he wrote when he was only twenty years old (1956). In 1987, however, he revised the work, and it is this 1987 revision that can be heard in this performance from Dresden which took place on October 7 of this year.

Enjoy!
