OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Tenor-turned-baritone Placido Domingo can be heard this coming Saturday (August 16) on NPR in a performance of Massenet's "Thais." The opera was performed in Los Angeles this past May and is part of NPR's series of broadcasts from Los Angeles Opera.

Music of composer Joseph Martin Kraus, who is sometimes referred to as The Swedish Mozart, can be heard on Saturday, as Swedish Radio airs a performance from Vadstena of his opera "Silverskeppet." The opera is actually one that was put together by conductor Jonas Dominique, who claims to have chosen some of Kraus's best music in assembling this "new" work.

Music of Mozart himself can be heard on RAI as a performance from La Scala of his masterpiece "Cosi Fan Tutte" is scheduled to be broadcast, the performance itself originally having taken place on June 21, 2014.

One of the best-kept secrets -- even for many opera-lovers -- is the fact that Franz Schubert wrote some beautiful operas, and one of these ("Fierrabras") is being performed this very evening as part of this summer's Salzburg Festival. It will be broadcast on Saturday on ORF.

Another opera that is actually being performed today (in Berlin), and then broadcast on Saturday, is Korngold's comic opera "Die Stumme Serenade" ("The Silent Serenade") which was first performed in 1954. Although the work received negative reviews at the time of its premiere, subsequent performances seem to have shown that tastes sometimes change over a period of time.

Latest news!
I guess I should have mentioned that "Il Trovatore" will be shown LIVE this Friday -- Salzburg Festival performance with Anna Netrebko as Leonora & Placido Domingo as Di Luna.

The page says that it starts at 10 a.m. -- but I'm not sure that that's OUR time (???)

WGBH Postpones its annual Labor Day Opera Bash!

WGBH's annual Labor Day Opera Bash is missing from its monthly printed schedule. A call to the station revealed that the reason for this omission is that WGBH has changed its fiscal year so that they will now be doing fund-raising during the Labor Day weekend. The Opera Bash has been postponed to a later date in the autumn, probably October or November. We will keep you posted on any developments. In the meantime, please write them a note, encouraging them to make sure they broadcast the opera bash and more opera in general. I'm told that every single letter is read and taken into consideration. This is a link to their website:
