  • Rigoletto

US: June 18, 2014, 7 pm (local time)

Michael Mayer’s acclaimed production, the talk of the opera world when it premiered in 2013, sets the action of Verdi’s masterpiece in 1960 Las Vegas—a neon-lit world ruled by money and ruthless, powerful men. In this bold new vision (featured on 60 Minutes), Piotr Beczala is the Duke, a popular entertainer and casino owner. Željko Lučić sings Rigoletto, a comedian and the Duke’s sidekick, and Diana Damrau is Rigoletto’s innocent daughter, Gilda. When she is seduced by the Duke, Rigoletto sets out on a tragic course of murderous revenge.
Original transmission: Saturday, February 16, 2013
Approximate runtime: 2 hours, 30 minutes
  • La Rondine

US: June 25, 2014, 7 pm (local time)
Puccini’s achingly beautiful score charmingly conveys the plight of Magda (the “swallow” of the title), who unexpectedly finds true love with the handsome young Ruggero. But their idyllic life comes to a premature end as she is haunted by the fear that her checkered past will ruin his future. Opera stars Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna portray Puccini’s star-crossed lovers. Nicholas Joël’s production features elegant and sophisticated art-deco sets that contribute to the dazzling stage picture.
Original transmission: Saturday, January 10, 2009
     Approximate runtime: 2 hours
  • Otello

US: July 9, 2014, 7 pm (local time)
In Verdi’s retelling of Shakespeare’s towering tragedy, Renée Fleming gives a captivating performance as the innocent Desdemona, a role long considered one of her calling cards. As the title hero, Johan Botha, delivers an imposing portrayal of a proud warrior brought down by jealousy, and Falk Struckmann is thrilling as the villainous Iago.
Original transmission: Saturday, October 27, 2012
Approximate runtime: 2 hours, 45 minutes

  • The Enchanted Island

US: July 16, 2014, 7 pm (local time)
A contemporary take on the 18th-century genre of the pastiche, this delightful Baroque fantasy brings together some of the greatest arias and ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, Purcell, and other composers, with a new English libretto by Jeremy Sams, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The all-star cast is headed by David Daniels as Prospero, Joyce DiDonato as Sycorax, Danielle de Niese as Ariel, Luca Pisaroni as Caliban, and the legendary Plácido Domingo as Neptune. William Christie conducts this dazzling world-premiere production.
Original transmission: Saturday, January 21, 2012
Approximate runtime: 3 hours, 15 minutes
  • Roméo and Juliette

The world’s most famous love story comes to operatic life with superstars Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna as the star-crossed young couple. Their performances brought audiences to their feet in both the opera house and in movie theaters. Gounod’s ultra-sensual interpretation of Shakespeare also features Nathan Gunn as Mercutio and Plácido Domingo on the podium.
Original transmission: Saturday, December 15, 2007
    Approximate runtime: 3 hours
  • La Fanciulla del West

    Check local listings
Puccini’s musical vision of the American West is vividly brought to life in the Met’s atmospheric production. Deborah Voigt is Minnie, the “girl of the golden west” and owner of a bar in a Californian mining camp. Marcello Giordani sings Dick Johnson, the bandit-turned-lover hunted by the cynical sheriff Jack Rance (Lucio Gallo), who wants Minnie for himself. Complete with whiskey-drinking cowboys, gunplay, a poker game, and a snowstorm, La Fanciulla del West is Puccini at his most colorful.
    * Only available for streaming in the US at this time.
Original transmission: Saturday, January 8, 2011
Approximate runtime: 2 hours, 30 minutes

Summer Sing: Carmina Burana
A Singers tradition returns: This is your chance to sing through Carl Orff’s classic score, with boozy tavern scenes and two trips on Fortune’s wheel — that infernal contraption on which hopes rise and fall and kings or queens can become paupers.

Bring a score if you have one; we’ll have some to lend. Explore the score now; the Singers will perform Carmina with the Rhode Island Philharmonic in May 2015. Christine Noel conducts Orff’s own version for two pianos.

7 p.m. Friday, June 6, in The Carter Center for Music Education and Performance, The Rhode Island Philharmonic and Music School, 667 Waterman Avenue East Providence RI 02914

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

The Met's 2013/2014 may be over, but there are still some wonderful performances taking place in Europe and being made available to us on internet radio. For example, this Friday's performance of Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann" will be broadcast on Saturday (May 24) via ORF (Austria). It's a Vienna State Opera production and features Ildar Abdrazakov as the four villains. Abrazakov, as many of you will recall, sang the title role in Borodin's "Prince Igor" in the recent HD-transmission from the Met.

In Amsterdam, Gounod's "Faust" is currently in production, and a recent performance will be broadcast on Radio 4 (the Netherlands). Tenor Michael Fabiano (Cassio in the Met's HD-transmission of Verdi's "Otello") may be heard as Gounod's hero.

Meanwhile, over in Brussels, Verdi's "Rigoletto" is being performed this month. You can catch a recent performance of it on Klara (Belgium), and you may want to watch it for free (next month) when the opera company's website presents it as a video-stream.

Two ever-popular operas by Puccini also appear on Saturday's schedule, one of which being part of NPR's series of broadcasts from the 2013/2014 season of Lyric Opera of Chicago. "Madame Butterfly" -- originally performed in October 2013 -- is the one to be heard on Saturday.

Then there's "La Boheme" on German Radio in a performance that took place in Bremen on January 26, 2014.

Fans of 21st century opera, on the other hand, have reason to rejoice as BBC Radio 3 brings us a broadcast of the world premiere of Julian Anderson's "Thebans" -- based on the Sophocles trilogy of plays most familiar to those who know the Oedipus Rex tale. It's an English National Opera production and has been receiving rave reviews in British newspapers. (N.B. This one hits the "airwaves" on Monday -- Memorial Day.)

Enjoy! -- And have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!

DAVE
