RI Public Radio Artscape: Opera Star Calls Rhode Island Home

John Reylea ~ in The Damnation of Faust

John Reylea is an internationally renowned opera star.
The bass singer has performed and recorded with many orchestras and companies including Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Boston Symphony.
Reylea hails from Canada, but now calls Rhode Island his home.
For this month’s Artscape, Rhode Island Public Radio’s John Bender sat down with the opera star, to talk about his career and what brought him to the ocean state.
Rosie’s Corner

Back in the seventies, before my daughter was born, her father and I were going through the bins of classical records in the old Tower Records Classical Annex. A tiny girl, no older than six years old, was there with her father. “Daddy, which Traviata are we going to buy today.” I remember looking down at her and thinking, “Oh my God!”
This little girl reminded me of that other little girl, so long ago.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

For the first radio broadcast from the Met for the year 2014, it's Mozart's ever-delightful "The Magic Flute" with young tenor Alek Schrader as Tamino. Schrader, as some of you may recall, impressed many opera fans last season when he appeared as Ferdinand in the Met's HD-transmission of Thomas Ades's opera "The Tempest."

This Saturday's schedule, however, appears to be dominated by the operas of Richard Strauss, with three of his major works being broadcast, one of which being his final opera -- "Capriccio" -- which features superstar soprano Renee Fleming as the Countess Madeleine (the same role that she sang a few years back in the Met's HD-transmission of this opera). This particular performance, however, took place this past July at London's Royal Opera House and can be heard on BBC Radio 3.

The more popular Richard Strauss opera "Der Rosenkavalier" appears on the schedule of the Belgian radio station Klara, which will be airing a performance of the work that took place at the Flemish Opera (Antwerp) just last month.

The third Richard Strauss opera this weekend is none other than "Die Frau ohne Schatten" in a performance from Munich that took place on November 21, 2013. Those of you who were fortunate enough to watch the LIVE video-stream of this work may be interested in knowing that this RADIO broadcast is of a different performance, but with the same cast that was seen in the video.

Similar information also applies to French Radio's broadcast this Saturday of Verdi's "La Forza del Destino." Again, this is a different performance of the work than the one that was video-streamed on the Bavarian State Opera's website last weekend (same cast).

And for those of you who may have missed this one the first time around: Swedish Radio is broadcasting the May 26, 2013 performance from Leipzig of Wagner's "Das Liebesverbot" -- his second opera and the only one of his that was based on a Shakespearean play ("Measure for Measure"). Opera-goers who know Wagner's music mainly through works like "Tristan" and the Ring Cycle (for example) may be surprised at the tunefulness of this early score.

This is a delightful bit of Rolando Villazon with the Sesame St. Muppets, Bert and Ernie. Unfortunately, it's in German but you don't need the language to enjoy the joke.   CLICK HERE:
