OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Many opera stations on the internet this coming Saturday (December 14) will be carrying the LIVE Met broadcast of Verdi's "Falstaff" which will simultaneously be shown in certain local movie theatres. Reviews, so far, have been positive, especially for baritone Ambrogio Maestri who will be singing the title role -- a role that is a kind of distant relative (so to speak) of Dulcamara in Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore" which he performed with Anna Netrebko and Matthew Polenzani last season at the Met.

Another well-known comic opera -- Rossini's "Barber of Seville" -- can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands) in a performance by Reisopera which took place on November 24 of this year. Earlier on the same day (this would be the morning hours here in our area) Radio 4 will be broadcasting a LIVE matinee performance from Amsterdam of Detlev Glanert's 2006 opera "Caligula" which is one of the best 21st century operas that are out there at present, IMO.

Another "modern" opera (this one, from 1997) can be heard on German Radio, as the world premiere performance of Bernhard Rosenfeld's "Kniefall in Warshau" ("Atonement in Warsaw") is broadcast, as heard in 1997 in Dortmund.

Fans of 19th century French opera will be given a chance to hear one of the most popular of that era, as Swedish Radio gives us a performance of Massenet's "Manon" as performed in Malmo on 11/30/13.

A Mozart favorite -- "The Magic Flute" -- is scheduled for next Monday on the Met's free LIVE audio-stream, this being the premiere performance this season of the work at the Met.

And why not kick things off TODAY ?? BBC Radio 3 is broadcasting a LIVE performance from Covent Garden of Wagner's "Parsifal" with bass Rene Pape once again singing the role of Gurnemanz which he did so well at the Met earlier this year. And if you should happen to be reading this a bit late in the day today, you can always access the audio of this performance for at least several more days, by going to the website indicated below this paragraph.

Enjoy!

8:00pm, Saturday, December 21st
SILENT NIGHT - This opera recounts the true story of the World War I Christmas Eve truce. For one magical evening on December 24, 1914, French, German and British soldiers laid down their arms and joined in a spontaneous celebration reflecting the peace, fellowship and humanity of the season. Based on the Academy Award-nominated film Joyeux Noel, this two-act production was commissioned by the Minnesota Opera and premiered in November 2012 to national acclaim, including a Pulitzer Prize for Music for composer Kevin Puts. With a libretto by Mark Campbell, "Silent Night" is sung in French, English, German, Italian and Latin with English subtitles.
