Here's The Thing

Alec Baldwin interviews Renée Fleming

Rosie’s Corner

Last week, I posted links to a two-part interview with Simon Keenlyside by Bing and Dennis. These interviews introduced me to a great interviewing team, Bing and Dennis on Classic Talk from the Heart of Manhattan. They do a great job drawing out the stars of classical music. I have been listening to them for a few days and will be passing links onto you. The interviews run about 50 minutes, divided into two parts.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

A little bit of everything seems to be on tap for us on this coming Saturday (April 6) with most Internet radio stations broadcasting the LIVE performance from the Met of Wagner's "Das Rheingold" -- one of Wagner's shortest operas which, of course, means that it's still about two and a half hours long!

Well, two genuinely SHORT operas make up the double-bill, commonly known as "Cav & Pag" (namely, Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" & Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci") which is featured this Saturday on German radio in a performance that took place last week (March 28) in Darmstadt.

The Belgian station Klara is bringing us a recent concert performance of Gluck's lyrical tragedy (as it's called) "Alceste."

French Radio, on the other hand, is giving interested listeners a chance to hear baritone Simon Keenlyside's recent foray into atonal territory, as he takes on the title role of Berg's "Wozzeck" (performed in Vienna on March 24 of this year).

No weekly internet radio opera schedule would be complete, however, without at least ONE Verdi opera, and so Swedish Radio has obliged, by scheduling a LIVE broadcast of "Simon Boccanegra" via the Goteborg Opera Company.

Last -- but DEFINITELY not least -- the Met's FREE LIVE audio-stream is giving us TWO separate performances of Handel's "Giulio Cesare" which, as many of you know, will be the next HD-transmission later this month (4/27) and which stars soprano Natalie Dessay in the sparkling role of Cleopatra. The two performances are as follows: one tomorrow evening (April 4) & another one next Tuesday (April 9). Handel enthusiasts, rejoice!

Enjoy!

DAVE

Season Preview

A favorite DC spring tradition has arrived - the Washington Post's annual Peep Diorama contest!

No Peepton Abbey this year (there was one last year), but this rendition of Wagner's Ring Cycle is pretty cool. You can see the whole group of semifinalists here: http://wapo.st/104yr88 Which one is your favorite?
