Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu announced Thursday that she and French-Italian tenor Roberto Alagna were getting a divorce, in an interview with Mediafax news agency.
"We have decided together and on perfectly friendly terms with Roberto Alagna to get divorced as soon as possible," Gheorghiu said.
"Each of us will go his own way but we don't rule out performing together again as we have already done," she added.
The famous diva said she was ready to enter the new year "with a new identity" and mentioned London, Los Angeles, Moscow, Paris and Vienna as possible venues for her concerts in 2013.
Once dubbed opera's "love couple", Gheorghiu, 47, and Alagna, 49, wed in 1996 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York but theirs was an on-off marriage.
The couple separated several years ago, with rumours of a divorce circulating widely. For more gossip on their divorce, go to:

WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
New York's Metropolitan Opera, which last week
televised a magnificent performance of "Les Troyens" by Hector
Berlioz* and next Saturday (the 19th) will be giving us Donizetti's "Maria
Stuarda" with Joyce DiDonato, is taking a little break this coming
Saturday (Jan. 12) with an audio-only deal, as they bring us a performance of
Verdi's "Il Trovatore" with a cast that's particularly noteworthy in
the female department, with soprano Patricia Racette as Leonora and mezzo
Stephanie Blythe as Azucena.
If you choose not to tune in to "Trovatore,"
never fear, as there are 2 more Verdi operas on the schedule for this Saturday,
one of them being his relatively early opera "Macbeth" in an October
27, 2012 performance that took place in Lyons (France).
The other Verdi work is his much later masterpiece
"Otello" which can be heard in a performance that took place this
past November in Venice.
In a similarly tragic vein, there's Janacek's
"Jenufa" which ORF is broadcasting in a performance from the Zurich
Opera House (9/23/12).
And for those of you with more adventurous tastes, you
may want to turn to "Prinz von Homburg" by the recently deceased
German composer Hans Werner Henze. It's a LIVE performance from Mainz.
Puccini enthusiasts needn't feel slighted, however,
since the Met's free LIVE audio-stream this Friday evening at 7:25 is none
other than his operetta-like "La Rondine."

Enjoy!

COMING TO THE JANE PICKENS THEATER, Newport
Sunday, January 13, 2012, at 11 AM
Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu singing, on ice skates? NO.
OVERVIEW
Opera On Ice is the coming together of the marvels of opera music and the acrobatic maneuvers of figure skating all in one show. Recorded in the magical setting of the Verona Arena, the largest open-air opera theater in the world, Opera on Ice offers some of the most famous arias from twelve operas which have made music history: Don Giovanni – Aida – Carmen – Romeo and Juliet – Turandot – Tosca – La Traviata – Rigoletto – Nabucco - William Tell – L’Elisir d’Amore – Gianni Schicchi.
The international importance of the show is also due to the chorus, the orchestra and the Verona Arena singers as well as to the figure skating stars taking part, first and foremost Carolina Kostner and Olympic champion Stephane Lambiel. Italian skater, Carolina Kostner, has just won the European Championships and comes first in the world ranking.

FINALLY!
La Scala’s opening night opera,
Lohengrin,
will
be televised at the
Jane Pickens Theater on
Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 9 am.
PLEASE NOTE THE VERY EARLY START TIME!
OVERVIEW
Lohengrin is the story of a knight, the prince of
Christianity, who comes to the rescue of the mild Elsa of Brabant, to save her
from a dishonorable accusation of fratricide. The disappearance of Gottfried,
Elsa’s brother, is actually the work of Ortrud the witch, who belongs to the
world of the dark divinities of ancient Germany. Lohengrin asks for Elsa’s hand
in marriage but anonymously: as the custodian of the Holy Grail, he cannot say
who he is and where he comes from.
However, Elsa cannot control her doubt and curiosity, and demands to
know who he is. He gives in but is forced to leave forever, this time in a boat
pulled by a dove in flight.
Barenboim will be conducting this first opera in which
Wagner wove a dense-knit mesh of symbolic musical motifs. The production is
staged by director Claus Guth, who aroused no end of admiration last Season
with Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten. For the past five years we have shown the opening night of the opera season at Teattro della Scala Live on December
7th. This year the decision was made by
the distributor to record the performance and offer it to theaters at a later
date. Please enjoy!
