The Tempest

Approximate running time 2 hrs. 41 min.
“This is the Met at its adventurous best.” –Wall Street Journal
The New York Times calls Thomas Adès’s masterpiece “one of the most inspired, audacious and personal operas to have come along in years.” Robert Lepage’s “fantastical production…offers a superb cast, headed by the charismatic baritone Simon Keenlyside… Ariel is a dazzling creation and Audrey Luna conquers the role… Jasmine Catudal’s sets are alluring and inventive… Adès drew a textured, glittering and suspenseful account of his opera from the great Met orchestra.” The Financial Times lauds the performance’s “rare virtuosity… Keenlyside sang with sensitive force… [and] loomed and brooded magnetically.” The Associated Press praises Adès’s “magical score… filled with memorable passages of striking originality,” and Classical Review heralds Lepage’s “dazzling and thought-provoking production.”

STARRING:

Lance Ryan, Peter Bronder, Juha Uusitalo, Johannes Martin Kranzle, Dean Peterson, Anna Larsson, Nina Stemme, Rinnat Moriah

DIRECTOR:

Daniel Barenboim

OVERVIEW

The Ring Cycle continues with Siegfried, starring Lance Ryan as the ubermensch youth, in this new production from La Scala, Milan. The tale of gods and mortals, all set to Wagner’s incomparable music, is a must-see (and must-hear!) for any true opera lover. Wagnerian specialist Nina Stemme is Brünnhilde, with Daniel Barenboim at the podium.

PROGRAM NOTE

As the saying goes, ‘Never change a winning team’. And so continues the collaborative effort between Daniel Barenboim and Guy Cassiers on Der Ring des Nibelungen, the first time in La Scala’s history that the four-part epic has been performed in its original language and with the same director. In 2013, on the occasion of the bicentenary of Wagner’s birth, the complete Ring cycle will be performed in the same week, for two consecutive weeks.

This production of Siegfried, which sees the twilight of the Gods and the dawning of the era of the Heroes, features some of the finest Wagnerian voices of today, including Lance Ryan in the role of Siegfried, Anna Larsson as Erda, and Nina Stemme, recipient of the Italian National Association of Music Critics award for her Brünnhilde in Die Walküre.

Other Opera in Cinema screenings:

Sunday November 18th 11:00am The Marriage of Figaro-Royal Opera London

Sunday December 16th 11:00am La Cenerentola: A film by Andrea Andermann

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Aside from this Saturday afternoon's HD-transmission of "The Tempest" (Thomas Ades), there is one other Met offering worth noting, and that would be tomorrow night's free LIVE audio-stream of the opening night performance of Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera" with the same cast that will be performing this work next month (Dec. 8) when the Met treats us to yet another of its wonderful HD-transmissions at area movie theatres.

Also worth noting on Saturday (Nov. 10): There's a concert that was given in Paris on October 30 of Beethoven's "Fidelio" which features tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Floreston. Kaufmann, you may remember, sang the title role in Gounod's "Faust" last December when the Met transmitted that opera to area movie theatres.

Speaking of which, "Faust" will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3, when that station gives us a chance to hear what Opera North (in Leeds) has to offer, in a performance from last month.

Radio 4 (the Netherlands) brings us this week's noteworthy Russian opera: Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" in a performance that took place on the 13th of last month in Madrid.

Then there are a couple of popular "standards" on Saturday afternoon's schedule, as CBC Radio 2 airs Puccini's "Tosca" in a Canadian Opera Company performance which took place last January in Toronto, with Adrianne Pieczonka singing the title role. Met audiences had a chance to see and hear her in the role of Amelia in Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" not too long ago when Placido Domingo sang the title role in that opera.

And finally, Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" can be heard on NPR, as performed by the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

Enjoy!
