ARMIDA
Great Performances at the Met
Approximate running time 3 hrs. 50 min.
Saturday, September 15 -- 8pm; Sunday, September 16 -- 3:00am; Monday, September 17 -- 12:00am
Renée Fleming stars in the title role of Mary Zimmerman's Met premiere production, opposite no fewer than six tenors. "This [is] Ms. Fleming's show," the New York Times says. "Armida belongs at the Met. And the company has the right star in place." Lawrence Brownlee sings Rinaldo, and Riccardo Frizza conducts. Zimmerman describes the opera as “a buried treasure, a box of jewels.” The fanciful story of the sorceress who enthralls men in her island prison of sensual delights, she says, “has an epic, enchanted quality and a tremendous visual element.” Riccardo Frizza conducts.

Klingons? Why not?
Klingon Space Opera
Makes
Cosmic Debut
Date:
10 September 2010 Time: 02:46 PM ET
Die-hard "Star Trek" fans may want to dust off their Klingon dictionaries and take a transporter to Europe for the debut of the first opera ever to be completely sung in the invented science fiction language.
The opera, called "u," kicks off a three-day run at the Zeebelt Theater today in The Hague, Netherlands. The title "u" is the Klingon word for "universe" or "universal." [Photo of Klingon opera rehearsals.]
Tickets for the performances were still available as of Friday morning, according to Reuters.
Klingon, which is spoken by members of the fictional "Star Trek" warrior race of the same name, has evolved into a significant pop culture phenomenon since the American science fiction TV series first hit the airwaves in the late 1960s.
Fans worldwide adopted the alien dialect and made it one of the most popular constructed languages, opera organizers said.
Even natural wonders have taken on the fake sci-fi language. In August, Australia's Jenolan Caves announced plans for the world's first audio cave tour voiced entirely in Klingon.
And, since opera occupies a large part of Klingon culture, the creation of such a show here on Earth seemed like a logical choice, opera organizers said.
In April, the show's producers sent a message out into the cosmos inviting the "real" Klingon community to attend the upcoming performances.
The invitation was sent by a radio telescope to the Klingon home star, Arcturus.
"The Klingon are known as passionate opera lovers but at the same time very little was known about Klingon opera here, so as far as I was concerned that was a very interesting challenge to try and make an authentic, or as authentic something out of that as possible," the show's creator Floris Schonfeld told Reuters Television.
The 90-minute production follows the journey of Kahless the Unforgettable. After being betrayed by his brother and bearing witness to his father's brutal death, Kahless faces his bitter enemy, the tyrant Molor.
Along the way, Kahless fights to regain his honor by traveling into the underworld, waging epic battles, and reuniting with his true love, Lukara.
The show was well-received after a preview was staged Thursday evening, as reported by Reuters.
"It was really well interpreted, the music was really good, and the performance of the actors were fantastic," Reuters quoted audience member Erwin Slegers as saying.
WORF APPROVES! For the uninitiated, Worf was one of the main characters in Star Trek: TNG and the only Klingon officer on a Federation starship. (That explains a lot, I know...) |

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Opera-lovers have every reason to rejoice, now that
the 2012/2013 opera season is getting underway, with several interesting items
on tap for this coming Saturday (September 15).
For those of you who simply can't get enough Donizetti
in your opera-listening schedule, there's the second opera he ever completed
(at age 21): "Enrico di Borgogna" which (as far as I can tell) hasn't
been performed in over 100 years. This opera can be heard on Swedish Radio, as
it was recently performed in Vadstena.
Handel enthusiasts have an opportunity to hear his
1744 opera (sometimes classified as an oratorio) "Semele" in a
performance that took place in Toronto this past May.
Of course, what Saturday afternoon opera schedule
would be complete without some Verdi & Puccini?
The Verdi work to be heard this weekend is "I
Vespri Siciliani" in a Viennese performance with soprano Angela Meade
singing the role of Elena. Ms Meade, you may recall, was outstanding earlier
this year when the Met featured her as Elvira in Verdi's "Ernani"
which was given a LIVE HD-transmission and subsequently was broadcast on PBS a
couple of months ago.
Puccini's "Turandot" gets a broadcast on the
Belgian station Klara in a performance that took place this past July 31 at
this summer's Orange Festival (France). Perhaps potential listeners would be
interested, primarily because tenor Roberto Alagna is heard in a rare
appearance (for him) in the role of Calaf. You may want to check out a few
videos of this performance which can be seen on YouTube, which means that
there's a video of the complete opera floating around somewhere. (I know that
Premiere Opera has it listed -- for purchase, of course.)
Renee Fleming's many fans (you know who you are) may
be interested in tuning in to French Radio, as she sings the title role in
"Arabella" (by Richard Strauss) which was performed this past June at
the Paris Opera. (And yes, there's a video of this one floating around, too.)
How about the World Premiere of Detlev Glanert's
newest opera "Solaris" which was performed this summer in Bregenz and
can be heard on German Radio in a performance from July 18? I've heard it
already and, IMO, consider it one of the best of the many 21st century operas
that I've come across.
Franz Schreker, whose opera "Der Schmied von
Ghent" was heard last season, may be making a comeback of sorts, as his
1918 opera "Der Schatzgraber" may be heard LIVEon Radio 4
(Netherlands) in a performance from Amsterdam.

ENJOY!
DAVE

November 3–4, 2012: Duruflé’s Requiem
Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs Like Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé left the terrifying “Dies Irae” movement out of his 1947 Requiem. It is a requiem that tends toward contemplation and consolation. Other works include Daniel Pinkham’s Wedding Cantata, and Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, a setting of five poems by his wife, Hila Plitmann.

Music was everywhere at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953: selections from England’s glorious musical past (Handel’s Zadok the Priest has been part of every coronation since George II in 1727) and new works by Herbert Howells, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Healy Willan and others. The Singers will perform music written for Queen Elizabeth at her coronation and during the six decades since, including new music from the recently published Choirbook for the Queen.

Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection Symphony,” was, with the Eighth Symphony, among Mahler’s most popular and successful works during his lifetime. He was struck by a text he heard at the funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow: “Auferstehen, ja auferstehen wirst du, mein Staub, nach kurzer Ruhe!” (“You shall arise, my dust, yes you shall arise after a brief rest!”) The Singers will perform as guest artists with the Rhode Island Philharmonic.
