Elina Garanča and
Karel Mark Chichon
are expecting their first child in October. That's good news for them but alas, not for the Met, where Garanča was due to perform in Anna Bolena with Anna Netrebko for opening night at the Met on October 15. Congratulations to the happy couple!
And best of luck to the Met Opera's manager, Peter Gelb who now has to find a comparable mezzo who is available on short notice...

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
Now that the Met's 2010/2011 opera season has drawn to a close, internet radio stations are beginning to offer their usual diversity of opera performances. For example, this coming Saturday (May 21), BBC Radio 3 has a performance on their agenda of Wagner's "Parsifal" as heard this past February at London's Coliseum (English National Opera).
From German Radio, there's a performance (originating from last month) from Berlin of Berg's "Wozzeck.
Two "rare" Verdi operas are also on tap:
"Stiffelio" can be heard in a LIVE performance from Stockholm.
"I Due Foscari" comes to us (also LIVE) from Paris, on French Radio.
There's also a world premiere in the offing this Saturday, as the CBC airs John Estacio's latest opera - "Lillian Alling" -- in a performance from last October, where the work was performed by the Vancouver Opera. Opera fans who usually shy away from contemporary works have nothing to "fear" from tuning in to this listener-friendly opera, if this Canadian composer's previous 2 operas ("Filumena" & "Frobisher") are anything to go by.
Perhaps of even greater interest is an oldie-but-goodie: a Met performance from April 7, 1962, of Puccini's "Tosca" with Leontyne Price and Franco Corelli at what many people consider to be the peak of their considerable powers. Surely an operatic event, if there ever was one (IMO) !!!

Enjoy!
