OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
With many of the summer
opera festivals now in full swing, there's quite a bit to choose from for
opera-lovers in the mood for some wonderful music at this point in the summer.
Wagner enthusiasts, in particular, can rejoice at the prospect of hearing LIVE
performances from this summer's Bayreuth Festival, with "Parsifal"
tomorrow and "Das Rheingold" on Saturday, followed by others next
week. You can check out the schedule at the link below.
The Salzburg Festival brings
us a LIVE performance tomorrow (July 27) of Mozart's "Clemenza di
Tito" (1791) which can be heard on ORF (Austria).
Then on Friday, a bit
of Rossini comes our way with a LIVE performance from Beaune of his early
serious opera "Tancredi" (1813) which French Radio will be airing.
On Saturday, the
Martina Franca summer festival begins with a LIVE performance of Meyerbeer's
"Margherita d'Anjou" (1820), written about a decade before his better
known "blockbusters" such as "Robert le Diable" and
"Les Huguenots."
NPR, on the other hand,
brings us a performance from last September of Verdi's "Macbeth" with
tenor/baritone Placido Domingo in the title role, as the network begins its
series of broadcasts from Los Angeles Opera's 2016/2017 season.
Many opera fans are
familiar with Verdi's comic masterpiece "Falstaff" which came at the
end of his career as a composer. However, his "other" comic opera --
"Un Giorno di Regno" ("King for a Day") -- was written in
1840, only his 2nd opera, written shortly after his 1st ("Oberto").
As it happens, there are TWO performances of this early work that can be heard
in the next few days, the first one being a broadcast of a performance from
Heidenheim. Then, on Sunday, Radio 3 (RAI) has scheduled a LIVE performance
from Martina Franca of this same work.
(Heidenheim
performance: www.dradio.de/dkultur/)
(Martina Franca
performance: www.radio3.rai.it/)
Also on Sunday, there's
a LIVE video-stream of Weber's final opera "Oberon" from the Bavarian
State Opera in Munich.
Enjoy!
