Johan Botha is Otello

Verdi’s towering masterpiece, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy, makes its first Live in HD appearance. Semyon Bychkov conducts an extraordinary cast led by Johan Botha in the title role of the jealous Moor of Venice, opposite Renée Fleming in one of her greatest roles, Otello’s innocent wife Desdemona. SINGERS MOURN A SUPPORTIVE MET TENOR

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

An interesting variety of offerings on the internet this weekend!

Opera lovers who just can't get enough of Puccini's "La Boheme" (who can blame them?) will, however, have to wait till Monday (June 8), but with soprano Anna Netrebko as Mimi and tenor Joseph Calleja as Rodolfo in a LIVE performance from London's Royal Opera House, it should certainly be worth the wait!

One of the masterpieces of Danish opera -- Carl Nielsen's "Saul & David" (1902) -- can be heard this Saturday on ORF. The opera, based on a chapter in the Book of Samuel involving Saul's jealousy of the young David, comes to us in a performance from Copenhagen that took place on May 3.

The Belgian station Klara is broadcasting a recent (May 2015) performance of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale." With tenor Juan Diego Florez singing the role of Ernesto, the opera was performed to great acclaim at the Vienna State Opera.

Then there's Donizetti in a serious vein coming to us on NPR. Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky takes the leading role in "Anna Bolena" in a December 2014 performance from Lyric Opera of Chicago. The performance also features tenor Bryan Hymel as Percy and bass-baritone John Relyea as Henry VIII. As many of you may know, Ms Radvanovsky will be singing this same role at the Met in the upcoming 2015/1016 season.

Ernest Chausson's intensely dramatic opera "Le Roi Arthus" (as recently performed in Paris) can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands) with an all-star cast: baritone Thomas Hampson as King Arthur, tenor Roberto Alagna as Lancelot, & mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch as Guinevere. In fact, a FREE video of last night's performance of this work is soon to become available on Culture Box.

This coming Saturday afternoon (June 6), you can watch a free LIVE video performance of Berg's "Lulu" direct from the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. (English subtitles available)

Then on Sunday (June 7), the new website -- the Opera Platform -- will be offering a free LIVE video performance of Wagner's "Die Gotterdammerung" from the Vienna State Opera (with English subtitles available). And this one should be available for viewing for several weeks afterwards.

Enjoy!
