WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Today's
performance from Paris of Rossini's opera "Tancredi" will be
broadcast on Saturday (May 30) on Swedish Radio, while a LIVE broadcast of
Mehul's "Uthal d'Etienne" (1806) comes to us on Saturday via French
Radio. The Mehul work will obviously be of major interest to those who enjoy
listening to works that are otherwise unavailable to the opera-listening
public.
Another
opera being "rescued" from obscurity this weekend is Herve's comical
version of the legendary Faust tale: It's his 1869 operetta "Dr. Faust
Junior" as performed in Munich earlier this month (May 16). Fans of the
lighter works of Offenbach will undoubtedly find much to enjoy in this
lightweight, melodic work.
If
neither Mehul's "Uthal d'Etienne" or Rossini's "Tancredi"
or Herve's "Dr. Faust Junior" sounds especially interesting, there's
always good old "Il Trovatore" (Verdi) which turns up on NPR in a
performance from Lyric Opera of Chicago (from November 2014). Mezzo-soprano
Stephanie Blythe -- a well-known Met singer ("Walkure" - "Ballo
in Maschera" - etc.) -- sings the role of Azucena in this one.
Finally,
beginning this Friday (May 29), a performance of Verdi's "Un Ballo in
Maschera" should become available for several weeks on the La Monnaie
website (Brussels). As usual, these performances from Brussels are free of
charge and, IMO, well worth one's time. (Coming up in July on the same website:
a triple bill of Rachmaninov: "Aleko" & "The Miserly
Knight" & "Francesca da Rimini").
Enjoy!
DAVE
