Offenbach's
Les Contes d'Hoffmann
The magnetic tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes on the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer of the title of Offenbach’s operatic masterpiece, in the Met’s wild, kaleidoscopic production. Hibla Gerzmava, Erin Morley, and Christine Rice sing the three heroines—each an idealized embodiment of some aspect of Hoffmann’s desire. Thomas Hampson portrays the shadowy Four Villains, and Yves Abel conducts the sparkling score.

WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Opera
fans can kick off their upcoming Memorial Day weekend this Saturday (May 23)
with a variety of opera offerings to choose from, one of which is a performance
from last October of "Capriccio" by Richard Strauss and starring
soprano Renee Fleming who's made a name for herself in this opera (among many
others) in the past several years. This particular performance is the first one
of a series of broadcasts on NPR, featuring operas from Lyric Opera of
Chicago's 2014/2015 season.
From
this past April 25, German Radio brings us a performance of Mussorgsky's
"Boris Godunov." It's a production from Darmstadt (Germany).
Also
in the month of April, a series of performances of Halevy's "La
Juive" took place in Antwerp, courtesy of the Flemish Opera. One of these
performances is being broadcast on the Belgian station Klara.
Earlier
this month, the city of Amsterdam saw performances of "Benvenuto
Cellini" by Hector Berlioz. Radio 4 (the Netherlands) will be airing one
of them on Saturday.
Then,
if you happen to be indoors on Memorial Day itself, feel free to listen to BBC
Radio 3 for a broadcast of Gluck's "Orfeo & Eurydice" in a
performance that took place in Glasgow this past February.
Enjoy!
DAVE
