FALSTAFF
FALSTAFF - An undisputed master of Verdi's final comic
masterpiece, James Levine conducts Robert Carsen's acclaimed production, the
first new Met Falstaff since 1964. Ambrogio Maestri sings the role of the
blustery Sir John Falstaff, opposite an ensemble cast
I can hardly express how sad this makes me. I have listened to the Saturday radio broadcasts since the seventies. Her voice--warm, cultured, knowledgeable--is now stilled at only 58. I will miss you and think of you every time I listen to the Met broadcasts.

WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Although the Met's
2014/2015 season of live broadcasts has come to an end, there are still several
worthwhile and intriguing opera broadcasts to be heard on internet radio this
coming Saturday (June 13). NPR, for example, is bringing us yet another of their
broadcasts of performances from this past season which were presented at Lyric
Opera of Chicago. Although not considered a "real" opera in the
minds of some music critics, "Carousel" (Rodgers & Hammerstein)
has recently been staged by opera companies, and the performance on hand was
given in Chicago this past April.
Handel's 3-act
opera seria from 1740 -- "Imeneo" -- can be heard on German Radio in
a performance that took place last Sunday in Halle. (Please note:
"Imeneo" is not to be confused with "Idomeneo" which, of
course, was written by Mozart and is a totally different opera from Handel's.)
Nearly everyone is
familiar with Disney's "Fantasia" and, in particular, the
"Sorcerer's Apprentice" sequence with Mickey Mouse and with music by
Paul Dukas. However, most people may not be at all familiar with Dukas's
opera "Ariane & Barbe-Bleue" which can be heard on French Radio
this Saturday in a performance that took place on May 6 in Strasbourg. In fact,
there's also a FREE video of this production (& with the same cast)
available, with French subtitles. (link provided below)
And what opera
schedule can be complete without at least one opera by Verdi? Well, as with the
Dukas opera mentioned above, there's both an audio and a video version of
"Un Ballo in Maschera" available for this recent performance from
Brussels. Unfortunately, if you should decide to watch the video, I am unable
to explain why everyone in the opera (including the chorus members) happens to
be wearing a helmet!
Enjoy!
