The history of the viola joke
Why pick on the poor violist? Martin Boyd searches for the
origins of the viola joke
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
This coming Saturday (June 20), fans of 20th
century opera can tune in to Radio 4 (the Netherlands) for a LIVE performance
from Amsterdam of Berg's "Lulu."
More 20th century opera is in the offing as
French Radio transmits the May 15, 2015 performance from Toulouse's of
Prokofiev's comic opera "The Betrothal in a Monastery."
Swinging backwards in time, there's Rameau's
5-act tragic opera from 1763: "Les Boreades." Swedish Radio is
broadcasting this one in a performance from last year's festival at
Aix-en-Provence (July 18, 2014).
On NPR, it's another installment of the series
of broadcasts from Lyric Opera of Chicago's 2014/2015 season, with a
performance from this past February of Wagner's "Tannhauser" with
tenor Johan Botha singing the title role.
ORF (Austria) will be broadcasting the
November 16, 2014 performance of Verdi's "Luisa Miller." This one
comes to us via the Hamburg Opera.
On Monday (June 22), BBC Radio 3 will be
airing a recent performance from this year's Glyndebourne Festival of
Donizetti's "Poliuto" (which, incidentally, has been getting rave
reviews in the British press).
If you can't wait till this weekend for your
next opera-listening experience on internet radio, there happens to be a LIVE
videocast this afternoon at 2 p.m. (if you can catch it in time) of Louis
Varney's 1880 comic opera "Les Mousquetaires au Couvent" (direct from
Toulon).
