All Verdi enthusiasts will, no doubt, be wanting to tune in to most
internet radio stations this coming Saturday afternoon (April 11) for
the LIVE performance from the Met of "Don Carlo."
The Met will also be airing a FREE live
broadcast on Tuesday (April 14) of Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana"
& Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" with Marcelo Alvarez singing the
tenor roles in both operas. Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek sings opposite him in
the Mascagni work, while soprano Patricia Racette takes on the role of Nedda in
"Pagliacci." This same cast is slated for the upcoming
HD-transmission, scheduled for the following Saturday afternoon (April
18).
But wait! If you happen to be one of those
opera fans who simply can't get enough of those 2 operas, you can actually hear
them both on ORF (Austria) this Saturday, when they will be broadcast in a
performance from Salzburg that took place on March 28 of this year. Tenor Jonas
Kaufmann sings both tenor roles (Turiddu & Canio). In fact, there's a
YouTube video of the April 6th Salzburg performance of "Cavalleria
Rusticana" (with German subtitles) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7hv52vHF1U
(Radio broadcast link: http://oe1.orf.at/)
From Paris: a genuine rarity. It's
Ferdinand Herold's final (completed) opera "Le Pre aux Clercs"
in a performance that took place last Thursday (April 2). Known primarily as
the composer of the earlier opera "Zampa" (the overture of which
was played quite frequently in vintage cartoons!), Herold wrote several
other comic operas that pre-figure in style those of Offenbach &
Delibes.
There's also a bit of Mozart on tap (in this
case, it's on Monday, April 13), as BBC Radio 3 brings us a performance from
London's Royal Opera House of "The Magic Flute." Plus, even if
you're unable to listen to it on Monday, it should be available for your
listening pleasure for a week or so afterwards on the BBC website.
Finally, here's another rarity, only this one
comes from the pen of American film composer Bernard Herrmann -- the man who
brought us the screeching violins in the infamous shower scene from the movie
"Psycho" as well as a number of creepy musical interludes
that were heard in various episodes of "The Twilight Zone."
In addition to also having written a symphony, Herrmann wrote a single opera --
"Wuthering Heights" -- which he worked on for several years, finally
finishing it in 1951. A LIVE performance of this opera can be heard on German
Radio this Saturday (Braunschweig). No screeching violins in this
basically tonal and conservative work!
Enjoy!

P.S.:
Here's a video of Monday's performance
from Salzburg of Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" with tenor Jonas
Kaufmann as Turiddu:
Please note: The video has German subtitles.
Also, a performance of Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" (also with Kaufmann)
was given on the same day, but (as of this writing) I haven't been able to
locate a video of that one & am not even sure as to whether or not one even
exists.
Enjoy!
