The Met's matinee broadcast this coming
Saturday afternoon (April 18) is not a LIVE performance, as is usually the
case. Instead, what will be broadcast is the November 10, 2014 performance of
Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" with soprano Eva-Maria
Westbroek singing the role of the murderous Katerina.
If your operatic taste normally runs in a more
conservative vein, you might want to listen to the March 20, 2014 performance
from Quebec of Handel's "Solomon" on French Radio. Usually regarded
as an oratorio rather than a full-fledged opera, this 1748 work features a
rather well-known orchestral passage ("The Arrival of the Queen of
Sheba") which, incidentally, was played during the 2012 London Olympics.
Bellini's "I Puritani" can be heard
on the Belgian station Klara. The performance being featured is one that
recently took place in Vienna. Having watched the video of this production with
this particular cast of singers, I can safely say that tenor John Tessier (as
Arturo) takes ALL the high notes -- including the F above high C in Act 3. (Not
sure if it's actually an F, but it's definitely above high C.)
Rossini enthusiasts can rejoice over the
prospect of choosing between 2 of his operas to tune in to, one of them being
his early (1812) one-act comedy "L'Inganno Felice" which can heard on
Swedish Radio in a performance from Venice that took place this past September
14.
On the other hand, in a more serious vein,
there's his 1813 opera "Tancredi" to be heard on German Radio. It's a
recent (March 27) performance that took place in Lausanne.
Then there's a Tchaikovsky opera that doesn't
happen to be either "Iolanta" or "Eugene Onegin" or
"The Queen of Spades." Instead, it's "The Enchantress" in a
performance from Vienna that took place on September 14, 2014.
Enjoy!
