WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
This coming Saturday (June 11), opera-lovers
can hear an opera composed as early as 1732, and even two world premieres. The
1732 work is Handel's "Sosarme, Re di Media" which was performed this
past May 27 at this year's Handel Festival, and can be heard on German Radio.
Swedish Radio, on the other hand, is
broadcasting the world premiere performance of Jan Sandstrom's "The Rococo
Machine" (LIVE from Drottningholm).
Having already composed his opera
"Hamlet" in 1990, composer Sergei Slonimsky has now provided us with
his own operatic version of "King Lear" which was performed this past
Monday (June 6) in Moscow, a video of which can be accessed at the link below
(no subtitles):

One more Shakespearean opera is on Saturday's
schedule as NPR brings us a recent Opera Delaware performance of Franco
Faccio's "Amleto" ("Hamlet"), premiered in 1865. Faccio's
opera seems to have acquired a new lease on life, as it is scheduled to be
fully staged again this summer at the Bregenz Festival.
French Radio brings us a rare opportunity to
hear Gasparo Spontini's "Olimpie" (1819) as performed in Paris last
Friday (June 3). Of some interest is composer Hector Berlioz's remark, made
after having attended a performance of this opera not long after its world
premiere: "Spontini is the composer of the century!"
Of interest to opera-lovers who prefer to
stick to the basic repertoire, Puccini's "Turandot" can be heard on
Radio 4 (the Netherlands) in a performance that took place in Vienna on May 12
of this year.
Enjoy!
DAVE
