DAVE D' AGUANNO
For the first Saturday of the summer, there
are numerous opera broadcasts awaiting us on the internet, one of which is a
performance from Paris of Wagner's "Tristan & Isolde." This one
can be heard on French Radio, the original performance having taken place on
May 21 of this year.
Over on Italian Radio (RAI), it's Giordano's
"Fedora" the premiere of which took place in 1898 and featured none
other than Enrico Caruso in the leading tenor role. The performance being
broadcast, however, was one that took place in Naples this past May 18.
These days Austrian composer Emil von Reznicek
may not be very popular, although a bit of the music from his opera "Donna
Diana" was once used in the opening credits for the 1950s TV show
"Sergeant Preston of the Yukon." Well, another one of his operas --
"Holofernes" (from 1922) -- was performed last month in Bonn, and
German Radio has scheduled it for this coming Saturday.
One of the most popular operas of Richard
Strauss -- "Der Rosenkavalier" -- can be heard on NPR, as a taped
performance from February can be heard as part of their continuing series of
broadcasts from the 2015/2016 season at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Mezzo-soprano
Alice Coote can be heard in this one.
If opera with a decidedly more
"modern" idiom is to your liking, Hungarian composer Peter Eotvos's
1997 opera "Three Sisters" (based on Anton Chekhov's play) can be
heard on BBC Radio 3, as performed last March at the Vienna State Opera.
Enjoy!
