WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
The operas that can be heard on internet radio
this coming Saturday (June 4) include Romanian composer Georges Enescu's
powerful opera "Oedipe" which (as the title suggests) deals with the
tragic events in the life of King Oedipus, beginning (in Act 1) with his being
abandoned as an infant and ending (in the final act) with his achieving his
final peace in death. The performance to be heard on Saturday will be coming to
us LIVE from London's Royal Opera House.
In a similar vein, there's Alban Berg's
"other opera" (as opposed to "Lulu") -- "Wozzeck"
-- which is this Saturday's offering from NPR. The opera can be heard, as
performed last November at Lyric Opera of Chicago.
One of the less frequently performed works of
Richard Strauss -- "The Egyptian Helen" -- appears on German Radio's
schedule, as performed in Berlin in early April of this year.
Considered to be one of the first grand operas
ever composed, Claudio Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo" (1607) received a
performance in Lille on May 21 of this year, & French Radio will be
broadcasting it this Saturday.
Those who might be anxious to begin their
"opera weekend" on Friday (June 3), as well as those who are
interested in hearing an opera by Mascagni that is NOT "Cavalleria
Rusticana," will undoubtedly be interested in the LIVE video-stream of
"L'Amico Fritz" which can be accessed at the link below on Friday
afternoon at 1 p.m.. The performance is one that will be taking place in
Venice.
Enjoy!
DAVE
