OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
The first Saturday of the New Year brings us
what will probably be a high-spirited LIVE broadcast from the Met of "Die
Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss.
Also LIVE -- but from London's Royal Opera
House (Covent Garden) -- is a performance of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene
Onegin" with baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the title role.
If the 2 operas listed above are simply not
long enough to satisfy one's operatic taste, even though there's no Wagner on
hand this weekend, there's always Rossini's grand opera "William
Tell" to fill the bill. The performance being broadcast took place in
Geneva on September 21 of this year.
On December 21, a performance of "The
Damnation of Faust" by Hector Berlioz took place in Paris with tenor Jonas
Kaufmann singing the title role. One can hear the performance on French Radio
this Saturday. On the other hand, one can also watch it (see the YouTube link
below), provided one can somehow grasp the concept of Faust embarking upon a
mission to Mars !! (I kid you not.)
(audio: www.francemusique.fr/)
And for those of you who'd rather spend New
Year's Eve listening to a good opera rather than being out-and-about, the Met
is offering a FREE live audio-stream tomorrow evening at 6:55 of Bizet's
"The Pearl Fishers."
Enjoy! -- And have a safe & wonderful New
Year !!!
DAVE
