Encore performance
The magnetic tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes on the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer of the title of Offenbach’s operatic masterpiece, in the Met’s wild, kaleidoscopic production. Hibla Gerzmava, Erin Morley, and Christine Rice sing the three heroines—each an idealized embodiment of some aspect of Hoffmann’s desire. Thomas Hampson portrays the shadowy Four Villains, and Yves Abel conducts the sparkling score.

GREAT PERFORMANCES
MacBeth
Anna Netrebko moves boldly into Verdi with her searing portrayal of Lady Macbeth, the mad and murderous mate of Željko Lucic’s doomed Macbeth. Adrian Noble’s chilling production also stars Joseph Calleja as the noble Macduff and René Pape as Banquo. Fabio Luisi conducts.
Approximate running time 2 hrs. 55 min.

WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Opera fans -- and those, in
particular, who are especially fond of soprano Anna Netrebko -- will be
happy to know that most internet radio stations this coming Saturday (Feb.
7) will be broadcasting a performance from last October of Verdi's
"Macbeth" in which Ms Netrebko sang the role of Lady Macbeth to great
acclaim.
Along with tenor Piotr Beczala, Ms
Netrebko will also be heard next Tuesday evening at 7:25 in
the Met's free LIVE audio-stream of Tchaikovsky's "Iolanta." Bartok's
"Bluebeard's Castle" will also be on the program, as it will be on Saturday,
February 14, when the two operas will be shown in HD at area movie theatres.
In the meantime, another of Franz
Schubert's incredibly beautiful operas which should be heard far more
often than it is -- "Alfonso & Estrella" -- will be
broadcast on ORF (Austria) this Saturday. The opera was recently performed
in Salzburg, specifically on January 23 of this year.
If your preference happens to be 20th
century opera of a basically conservative nature, you might want to tune in to
German Radio for a broadcast of Manfred Gurlitt's 1930 opera
"Soldaten" in a performance that took place in Osnabruck this past
January 17.
And if your taste runs more towards 21st
century opera, you can check out this Saturday's offering on Swedish
Radio, as the 2006 opera "The Flowering Tree" by John Adams will be
broadcast LIVE from Goteborg.
Here's the performance from London
of Placido Domingo in Verdi's "I Due Foscari"
(No English subtitles)
There's also a video of
"L'Elisir d'Amore" with Vittorio Grigolo (also from London), here:
(Again, no English subtitles)
The performance of Giordano's
"Andrea Chenier" from London that was recently shown in European
movie theatres has been uploaded to YouTube:
It stars Jonas Kaufmann & Eva-Maria
Westbroek -- no subtitles provided.
Also, you might want to check out
the live performance from Liege, scheduled for this Thursday (Feb. 5)
(time uncertain?) of Nicolai's "Merry Wives of Windsor." Here's the
link for that one:
And, on this coming Sunday afternoon,
live from Munich, a performance of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor"
with Diana Damrau as Lucia. English subtitles are usually available for the
video-streams coming out of Munich:
Enjoy!
