Happy Valentine’s Day
On the heels of her triumphant Met performances as Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by a psychological thriller (Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Maestro Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.

The Met's performance this Saturday (February 14) of Tchaikovsky's "Iolanta" & Bartok's "Bluebeard's Castle" can be seen in certain local movie theatres. Those who are unable to attend but are still interested in at least sampling the performance can access numerous internet radio stations, many of which will be broadcasting the audio itself.
Also noteworthy, IMO, is the broadcast on Klara (Belgium) of Handel's 1735 opera "Alcina" as performed in Brussels. A free video-stream of the current run of performances of this opera will be available on the opera company's website, beginning on Feb. 18.
On Swedish Radio, there's an opera dating from only 10 years later than "Alcina." It's Rameau's "Platee" (1745) in a performance that took place last March 27 in Paris.
Then on Monday (Feb. 16), the Met will be offering a LIVE broadcast on their free audio-stream of Rossini's "La Donna del Lago" which is scheduled for an HD-transmission on March 14. In a sense, then, this can be regarded as an audio preview of that upcoming transmission, as it features Joyce Di Donato as Elena (the so-called "Lady of the Lake"), along with tenor Juan Diego Florez as Giacomo V.
The recent performance from Munich of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" (with Diana Damrau) has been uploaded to YouTube, here:
My advice is to try to watch it ASAP if you're at all interested, since these videos have a tendency to vanish within a day or two. Enjoy!

It is with great sadness that I share the news that my wife, Ailyn Pérez, and I have separated, with the intention of divorcing. I am very grateful for all of the love we’ve received over the years from our friends, family, colleagues and fans, and hope you will continue to show your support for us by respecting our privacy at this difficult time.
