WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
On
Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21), the Met's LIVE broadcast of Mozart's
"Don Giovanni" can be heard on most internet radio stations.
More
"adventurous" listeners may want to tune in to some of the other
broadcasts being offered this Saturday. For example, Ernest Reyer's
"Sigurd" -- his most performed opera, believe it or not -- can be
heard on German Radio. It's a performance that took place in Erfurt this past
January 30. It may be worth noting that the plot of this relatively obscure
opera is pretty much the same as that of Wagner's "Siegfried" (Act 3)
and "Die Gotterdammerung" with the title character Sigurd being
simply a variant of the name Siegfried.
Looking
for something even more obscure? How about Gounod's 1877 opera
"Cinq-Mars" which is so seldom performed that no one alive today has
ever heard it (barring one or two arias that sometimes turn up on a few
singers' recital programs)? Well, that situation has been rectified since the
opera was actually performed in its entirety in Munich this past January 25,
and Radio 4 (the Netherlands) is broadcasting that performance.
And if
you missed it last year, Meyerbeer's "Vasco de Gama" (as performed in
Chemnitz) is being re-broadcast on Saturday afternoon. This work is,
in essence, Meyerbeer's final opera "L'Africaine" in its original
form, which includes over an hour's worth of music that was recently discovered
but never actually performed until the performance at hand took place --
bringing the total length of the opera to a Wagnerian (?) four hours-plus!
More
familiar fare is on tap for next Monday (February 23), with BBC Radio
3 bringing us the Royal Opera House performance of Wagner's "The Flying
Dutchman" starring Bryn Terfel. The work is also being televised in movie
theatres throughout Europe, and we can only hope that it will eventually make
its way over to the U.S. at some point in the future.
And
finally (also on Monday), the Met's free LIVE audio-stream is featuring
Bizet's "Carmen" with the same leading two singers -- Elina Garanca
& Roberto Alagna -- who appeared in the HD-transmission of this opera a few
seasons ago.
Enjoy!
DAVE
Handel's
"Alcina" & "Tamerlano" -- yes, both of them! -- will be
available later today for FREE video-streaming.
Both
operas were recently performed in Brussels.
English
subtitles may not be available for either performance.
