Fans of Wagner's relatively early opera
"The Flying Dutchman" have their pick of TWO performances to be
broadcast this coming Saturday afternoon (September 6). The one on ORF
(Austria) is a LIVE broadcast of the work, as performed at the Vienna State
Opera and starring Bryn Terfel in the title role. As some of you may recall,
Terfel was seen a couple of seasons back in the role of Wotan when the Met
transmitted the various operas of Wagner's Ring Cycle. Plus, for those of you
who may wish to spend a few dollars, next week's performance (Friday, September
12), with this same cast, will be available for live VIDEO streaming at the
Vienna State Opera website. (It may cost close to $20.)
The other broadcast of "The Flying
Dutchman" is NPR's offering this week as part of their series of
broadcasts from San Francisco Opera's 2013/2014 season, the performance being
aired having taken place last October/November (no specific date is given).

Another German opera -- "Elektra" by
Richard Strauss -- turns up on Swedish Radio this weekend, with a performance
of the work which was recorded in Umea on August 23 of this year.
Last but not least, those of you who may not
have watched the video of Schubert's "Fierrabras" last week (& which
is still available for free, I believe) might want to tune in to German Radio
when the performance of this opera & with the same cast from this summer's
Salzburg Festival is broadcast (originally recorded on August 13). I intended
to urge interested listeners to check it out since this beautiful opera is
seldom performed, but I see that it will be performed in Brussels
in January 2015 (with a different cast), & the operas performed in
Brussels usually become available for FREE video-streaming on their website --
TWO videos of "Fierrabras" within the space of a few months???
Enjoy!
