Two works of George Frederick Handel are on this Saturday's schedule (September 13). Although it is technically considered an oratorio, "Solomon" (from 1749) is featured on German Radio Saturday afternoon. The performance itself is taking place today, in fact, in Stuttgart.
Also, technically not an opera but (in this case) labeled as a "dramatic cantata" -- his work entitled "Acis, Galatea & Polyfemos" (an early piece from 1708) can be heard on Swedish Radio in a performance from Copenhagen that took place on August 3, 2013.
Jumping ahead into the 20th century, Henze's opera "Elegy for Young Lovers" can be heard on RAI in its 1988 version. The performance took place on March 27, 2014, in Venice. (Please note: This is actually scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday rather than Saturday.)
As many of you may already know, soprano Licia Albanese passed away last month, but many of her exciting performances can still be heard. Thanks to NPR, you can listen to her studio recording (from February 1946) as Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme." She's partnered by tenor Jan Peerce, and the conductor is Arturo Toscanini who actually conducted the world premiere of this opera back in 1896. Check it out!
Enjoy!
