The Pearl Fishers

Les Pêcheurs de Perles
Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East returns
to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years. Soprano Diana Damrau
stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl
divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew
Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet
“Au fond du temple saint,” which opera fans know and adore.
Director Penny Woolcock explores the timeless themes of pure
love, betrayal, and vengeance in a production that vividly creates
an undersea world on the stage of the Met. Conductor Gianandrea
Noseda brings his romantic flair to the lush score from the composer
of Carmen.

Dueling Double Divas: A Comic Micro-Opera

The independent local film, Dueling Double Divas: A Comic Micro-Opera, showcases the world premiere of the composition performed by New York Metropolitan Opera sopranos Lori Phillips and Mary Phillips during their recent appearance at Rhode Island College. This performance by the identical twins marks their first ever recital together.

Conceived and composed for the Phillips twins by pianist and Rhode Island College Artist-in-Residence Judith Lynn Stillman, the micro-opera is "an entire operatic tale told in 15 minutes."

"[The form] works well for the short attention span society," Stillman said. "If you're afraid of opera, this is a great way to get your feet wet."

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

The LIVE broadcast & HD-transmission from the Met of Bizet's "Pearl Fishers" dominates the listings on most internet radio stations this coming Saturday (January 16). Since the Met hasn't produced this opera in about 100 years, now might be a good time to savor its considerable melodic treasures, as well as what promise to be wonderful performances from soprano Diana Damrau as Leila, tenor Matthew Polenzani as Nadir, and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien as Zurga.

The Met also has a FREE live audio-stream available this evening at 7:25 p.m. of Puccini's "La Boheme."

Of special interest to opera-lovers who don't mind veering off the so-called beaten path, there's a broadcast on German Radio of Janacek's "Makropulos Case" as performed on December 13, 2015, at the Vienna State Opera.

Speaking of the Vienna State Opera -- Wagner's Ring Cycle is currently being shown (for a reasonable fee) on their website. Last Sunday saw a LIVE video-stream of "Das Rheingold" which I personally found to be well worth the approximately $15.00 I paid for it. Tonight it's "Die Walkure." Then on Sunday (Jan. 17), "Siegfried" is scheduled to be shown, followed by a LIVE video-cast of "Die Gotterdammerung" on the following Sunday (Jan. 24). Wagner enthusiasts, check it out: http://www.staatsoperlive.com/en/live/  (not to mention a generous number of other operas to be shown later in the season!)

Enjoy!
