This
coming Saturday (October 11) marks the beginning of the Met's series of LIVE
HD-transmissions in area movie theatres, and many opera fans will be flocking
to see Verdi's "Macbeth" and, in many cases, especially to see and
hear soprano Anna Netrebko in the role of Lady Macbeth. Others in the cast
include baritone Zeljko Lucic in the title role, Joseph Calleja as Macduff, and
Rene Pape as Banquo.
Should you decide to listen to opera on internet radio this Saturday instead, you might want to tune in to ORF for a LIVE performance from the Vienna State Opera of Mozart's "Idomeneo" which, incidentally, will become available on your computer as a LIVE video-stream on Tuesday, October 14 (for a fee equalling approximately $18).
The Belgian station Klara is scheduling a broadcast of Rameau's "musical tragedy" of 1754 -- "Castor & Pollux" -- in a performance that took place this past July 24 in Montpellier.
French Radio is offering a broadcast from Geneva of Catalani's opera "La Wally" (a video of which is available on YouTube, in fact). The performance took place on June 24 of this year.
And if you're in the mood for something completely different, there's Tobias Picker's most recent opera -- "Dolores Claiborne" -- which premiered last September (2013) in San Francisco, with soprano Patricia Racette stepping in at virtually the last minute to take on the portrayal of Dolores Claiborne herself. And yes, this is based on the Stephen King novel which was made into a movie back in the 1990s.

On the other hand, if you're an old-timer (like me), Swedish Radio is digging into the Met's archives and will be broadcasting the January 4, 1958 performance of Gounod's "Faust" with tenor Nicolai Gedda in the title role. If the prospect of hearing Gedda in his youthful prime isn't enough, you also get to hear soprano Hilde Gueden as Marguerite, Jerome Hines as Mephistopheles, & one of the baritone greats of yesteryear: Robert Merrill as Valentin.

Here's the schedule for the operas that will be
video-streamed (for free) from Brussels. You'll notice that each opera is
available for viewing for a few weeks after it is first shown:
"Daphne" by Richard Strauss is
already available for viewing. I've seen it and was greatly impressed by it,
even though the production is "modern" and Gaea (Daphne's mother) is
depicted as being quite tipsy throughout the course of the opera. On the other
hand, I thought that Daphne's transformation into a laurel tree at the end of
the opera was handled really well, and the soprano (Sally Matthews) was
outstanding!
A word about some of the lesser-known operas to be
presented:
"Shell Shock" is a world premiere, the opera
having been written by Belgian composer Nicholas Lens.
"Jakob Lenz" is by Wolfgang Rihm and
contains what you might call "modern music."
"Penthesilea" is another world premiere,
this one by French composer Pascal Dusapin.
The so-called Rachmaninov "Troika" is
actually a triple-bill of his 3 one-act operas: "Aleko" -- "The
Miserly Knight" -- & "Francesca da Rimini"
Enjoy!
