OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This coming Saturday (October 18) marks the appearance of the Met's second HD-transmission in local movie theatres, the opera on the schedule being Mozart's ever-popular "The Marriage of Figaro." Singing the role of Figaro is bass-baritone Ildar Abdrazakov, this role being a far cry from the role of Prince Igor which he performed last season at the Met.

If you should happen to be staying home instead of attending the HD-transmission of Mozart's comic masterpiece, there's plenty of opera being offered on internet radio, including the LIVE broadcast from the Vienna State Opera of "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss. Tenor Johan Botha (Otello from the Met's HD-transmission of the Verdi work a while back) sings the role of Bacchus.

Another LIVE opera performance turns up on Swedish Radio. It's a broadcast of "Blanche & Marie" -- a new opera by Swedish composer Mats Larsson Gothe -- as performed in Umea. The "Marie" of the title refers to Madame Curie, & "Blanche" is former mental patient Blanche Wittman. Might be worth checking out, IMO.

On more familiar ground, French Radio is broadcasting the September 30, 2014 performance of Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera" which took place in Toulouse.

Yet another opera by Richard Strauss appears on this Saturday's schedule. His intensely dramatic "Elektra" is on Klara (Belgium) in a recent performance by the Flemish National Opera.

In Amsterdam, there's a relatively rare performance of Chabrier's comic opera "L'Etoile" ("The Star") -- an absurd take on the faith some people place in horoscopes.

Aside from the operatic offerings mentioned above, there are also 2 other broadcasts worth noting, one of which takes place on Monday(October 20) on BBC Radio 3, this being a presentation of Rossini's "Moses in Egypt" which was performed earlier this month in Cardiff by the Welsh National Opera.

The other broadcast takes place TONIGHT at 7:25 p.m. on the Met's FREE live audio-stream. It's Verdi's "Macbeth" with the same cast that performed the work in last Saturday afternoon's HD-transmission.

Enjoy!
