Sir John Tavener has died, aged 69

Sir John Tavener, the composer who established his reputation when his oratorio The Whale was premiered at the London Sinfonietta's inaugural concert in 1968, has died, aged 69.

Tavener was best known for his religious music, and joined the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977. His Orthodox faith and the rituals of the church exerted a huge influence on his work. However, he later regretted quite how close his association with the church became. "The thing I regret most about my life are those inane photos of me with icons," he told the Guardian earlier this year. "They used to come down here and dress me up, and I just tolerated it. It's my fault. But I shouldn't have done it. They literally brought down costumes, candles and icons! It was unbelievable stupidity
."

However, the music that resulted – including The Protecting Veil, The Lamb, Song for Athene and Eternity's Sunrise – was both widely acclaimed and came to define him in the public eye. In later years, he expanded his spiritual palette: the 2003 work The Veil of the Temple took inspiration from a number of religions, though he remained – he told the BBC in 2010 – "essentially Orthodox".

Tavener had long had problems with his health, having suffered a stroke in his 30s, as well as two heart attacks and a brain tumour. He died peacefully at home in Child Okeford in Dorset. He is survived by his wife Maryanna and three children.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

It's mostly Italian opera that dominates the internet opera schedule this coming Saturday (November 16). Actually, one of the most interesting items happens to be Verdi's "I Vespri Siciliani" in its French format ("Les Vepres Siciliennes") which can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands). The performance being broadcast is from London's Royal Opera House, given on October 29, 2013, and featuring tenor Bryan Hymel (recently seen in Berlioz's "Les Troyens" at the Met) and bass Erwin Schrott (husband of superstar soprano Anna Netrebko). I believe that this opera with this particular cast will be shown later this season in movie theaters, hopefully at the Providence Place Mall.

Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore" obtains its spot on Swedish Radio's opera schedule this Saturday, the performance itself being one that took place earlier this month in Goteborg (Sweden).

In pretty much the same vein, there's Rossini's ever-popular "Barber of Seville" on German Radio, as performed this past November 7 in Turin (Italy).

NPR, on the other hand, has more Verdi for us: "Il Trovatore" in a Houston Grand Opera performance that took place this past April.

In the midst of all these mainstream 19th century works, ORF will be bringing us the world premiere of composer Iain Bell's very first opera: "A Harlot's Progress." Of primary interest, no doubt, for many prospective listeners would be the presence of soprano Diana Damrau in the featured role of Moll Hackabout. This 21st century work was given its premiere last month in Vienna. (Incidentally, Bell is currently working on a second opera: "A Christmas Carol")

Unfortunately, there aren't any FREE audio-streams from the Met this coming week; however, 2 Richard Strauss operas are currently scheduled the week after!

Enjoy!

DAVE
