OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
This coming Saturday (April 9), the LIVE
broadcast from the Met will feature Placido Domingo singing the title role in
Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" which can be heard on many internet radio
stations.
Also coming to us LIVE on Saturday afternoon
is a performance from Goteborg of "Hamlet" by Ambroise Thomas.
Swedish Radio will be broadcasting this one and will be making it available for
future listening on their website for about a week.
The Vienna State Opera's current production of
Janacek's "Jenufa" is on ORF, the performance being broadcast on
Saturday is the one that happens to be taking place today.
Since British composer Peter Maxwell Davies
passed away just last month, it is only fitting that BBC Radio 3 should be
honoring his memory with a 2009 broadcast from Glasgow of his opera
"Taverner" (completed in 1972).
And finally, the Obscure Opera of the Week
(possibly of this whole year, thus far) is undoubtedly German composer Hans
Sommer's 1904 opera "Rubezahl und der Sachpfeifer von Niesse"
("Rubezahl & the Bagpipers of Niesse"). You can catch this one on
German Radio, the performance being one that took place in Gera just last
Saturday.
Enjoy!

Bernstein and Sondheim
Leonard Bernstein (Candide, West Side Story) and
Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, Passion, Into the Woods) are two giants of the
American musical stage. The Singers offers a hefty sampling of their work —
nine Sondheim songs, four selections from Bernstein’s Candide, and a medley
from West Side Story — in a year that marks the 60th anniversary of Candide’s
original Broadway performance.
