OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Opera-lovers who relish the prospect of
hearing performances of Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" and
Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" have reason to rejoice, since there are TWO
radio broadcasts of these operas scheduled for this coming Saturday (February
6). One of them is the LIVE broadcast from the Met which can be heard on most
internet radio stations. The other is the broadcast of a performance from
December 2015 that featured tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko as both Turiddu
("Cavalleria") & Canio ("Pagliacci"). The two works
were performed in London's Royal Opera House and will be transmitted via BBC
Radio 3.

An opera by Donizetti's teacher -- Giovanni
Simone Mayr -- is featured on ORF this weekend. The opera in question is
probably the one most often performed these days out of a total of over 60 of
his operas. It's "Medea in Corinto" (1813), and the performance to be
heard is one that took place this past summer (July 30, 2015) in Martina
Franca.
If the operas of Giovanni Simone Mayr are
infrequently performed, those by Siegfried Wagner (the son of You-Know-Who) are
probably even more obscure. Yet, German Radio has scheduled a performance of
Siegfried's 1915 work: "An Allem ist Hutchen Schuld" ("It's All
Hutchen's Fault"), which is the 11th of his approximately 16 operas
composed during his lifetime (not counting a couple that were left incomplete
upon his death). The performance on hand is one that took place in Bochum on
October 18 of last year.
This week's "modern" work is Pascal
Dusapin's "To Be Sung" (from 1994) which was performed just last
month in Brussels.
Last but certainly not least, the Met is
offering yet another in its series of FREE live audio-streams. The one
scheduled for tomorrow evening (Feb. 4) is Bizet's "Pearl Fishers"
with the same male leads seen in the recent HD-transmission of this work
(Matthew Polenzani as Nadir, & Mariusz Kwiecien as Zurga), with the soprano
lead (Leila) now being sung by Amanda Woodbury.
Enjoy!
