WERTHER

WERTHER - Director Richard Eyre returns to the Met with a new staging of Jules Massenet's tragic romance "Werther," starring Jonas Kaufmann and Sophie Koch in their first Met performances as the brooding poet Werther and his unattainable love, Charlotte. Lisette Oropesa sings the role of Sophie, Charlotte's sister; David Bizic makes his Met debut as Charlotte's fiance, Albert; and Jonathan Summers is Charlotte's father, Le Bailli. Alain Altinoglu conducts the first new Met production of the opera in more than 40 years.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This coming Saturday (July 25) marks the start of a series of LIVE broadcasts from this summer's Bayreuth Festival. The first opera to be heard is "Tristan & Isolde" (being carried on various internet radio stations). Unfortunately, not all stations' websites are in agreement as to the identity of the soprano who will be singing the role of Isolde! Will it be Evelyn Herlitzius? Or Anja Kampe? Those who are truly interested will have to tune in on Saturday to find out, I guess.

If you happen to be delighted by comic operas like Donizetti's "Don Pasquale", then you may very well be intrigued by the prospect of listening to Antonio Cagnoni's "Don Bucefalo" which followed the Donizetti work by only a few years (1847). Cagnoni's opera can be heard on ORF in a performance from the Wexford Festival in Ireland this past November.

On the other hand, if you fancy a brand-new 21st century opera that received its world premiere performance as recently as this past May 10, you'll want to check out the broadcast on German Radio of Austrian composer Beat Furrer's new opera "La Bianca Notte." The performance to be heard took place in Hamburg.

Enjoy!

The Met Saturday afternoon
 radio broadcast season is over;

No opera on
WGBH this week!
