Rossini's
La Donna del Lago
Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Flórez join
forces for this Rossini showcase of bel canto virtuosity, set in the medieval
Scottish highlands. DiDonato is the “lady of the lake” of the title, and Flórez
is the king who relentlessly pursues her, with their vocal fireworks
embellishing the tragic plot. This Met premiere production is directed by Paul
Curran and conducted by Michele Mariotti.
Co-production of the Metropolitan Opera and
the Santa Fe Opera

DAVE D' AGUANNO
This coming Saturday (March 14), the Met
will be showing a LIVE HD-transmission of Rossini's "La Donna del
Lago" with Joyce Di Donato singing the title role. The cast also includes
tenor Juan Diego Florez, considered by many to be one of today's top Rossini
tenors. Mezzo-soprano Daniela Barcellona, however, should not be overlooked, as
this excellent singer will be taking on the majot "trouser role" of
Malcolm. The performance may also be heard on many internet radio stations.
BBC Radio 3, on the other hand, will be broadcasting a
LIVE performance from London's Royal Opera House (audio-only) of one of Kurt
Weill's best known works: "The Rise & Fall of the City of
Mahagonny" -- or just "Mahagonny" as it is often called.
Moving into the 21st century, the 2014 opera "Au
Monde" by Philippe Boesmans can be heard on French Radio in a performance
that took place in Paris on February 26 of this year. Anyone who may have
listened to, or watched the video of this opera which was available on the
Brussels website last year (its world premiere showing) can surely agree with
me that this is a basically tonal, conservative score that has a lot going for
it. Definitely worth checking out!
Then on Monday (March 16), Donizetti's
masterpiece "Lucia di Lammermoor" is being performed at the Met,
& this performance can be heard for FREE on the Met's LIVE audio-stream.
Tenor Joseph Calleja reprises the role of Edgardo, which he performed in the
HD-transmission of this opera a couple of seasons back (partnered at that time
with Natalie Dessay).
Enjoy!
