Classical Music Needs A Revolution & The Danger Of A Condiment Monoculture
By WORD
OF MOUTH
One of our wonderful colleagues over at Boston Public Radio has written a
mini-book on the classical music revolution he deems necessary, and spoke about
it on NHPR's "Word of
Mouth." What do you think? How should musicians, orchestras, and arts
organizations market themselves differently?

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
The temperature outdoors here in R.I. may be extremely frigid nowadays, but things are heating up (operatically speaking) on internet radio. To start with, the Met is offering two FREE live broadcasts on its audio-stream, the first of which is scheduled for tomorrow evening (Jan. 8) at 7:25 when Humperdinck's "Hansel & Gretel" will be presented, sung in English. Then on next Monday (Jan. 12), also at 7:25 pm, it's time for Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann." This particular broadcast may be considered an audio-only preview of the upcoming HD-transmission of this opera to be given later this month (Jan. 31).
Going back in time -- specifically, to the year 1735 -- Veracini's opera "Hadrianus in Syrien" can be heard on Swedish Radio in a performance from Vienna which took place in January 2014.
On more familiar territory (for most listeners), BBC's Radio 3 will be airing a performance from London's Royal Opera of Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera." Some singers who may be familiar from past HD-transmissions will be featured in this broadcast: namely, tenor Joseph Calleja, soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, & baritone Dimitri Hvorostovsky.
One of Donizetti's "French" operas appears on ORF's schedule on Saturday. In case you missed it when it was originally broadcast last summer, the Salzburg performance of "La Favorite" is featured, with mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca as Leonor and tenor Juan Diego Florez as Fernand.
Not to be left out of the list of mainly Italian operas on internet radio this Saturday, there's Rossini's "Semiramide" on French Radio in a performance from Paris, originally given on November 23, 2014.
And vying with the Veracini opera for the Obscure Opera of the Week, Franz Schreker's 1912 opera "Das Spielwerk & die Prinzessin" ("The Music-Box & the Princess") will be broadcast on German Radio in a performance from Kiel that took place on January 26, 2003 -- 12 years ago! (Does it really seem THAT long ago?)
Enjoy!
DAVE
