DAVE D' AGUANNO
Although this particular performance took
place earlier this week, I thought I'd give you a link in case you may be
interested, since it's being offered for FREE for the next few weeks: It's
Verdi's "Otello" as performed at this summer's festival in France (Choregies
d'Orange) and features tenor Roberto Alagna singing the title role. Video
excerpts can also be found on YouTube as well.
With this summer's opera festival in Salzburg
currently taking place, ORF will be broadcasting a LIVE performance of Verdi's
"Il Trovatore" on Saturday. Fans of soprano Anna Netrebko will,
no doubt, be interested in hearing her in the role of Leonora which is a
new one for her. As a bonus, you'll also get to hear (former) tenor Placido
Domingo singing the baritone role of Count di Luna in this same broadcast. (If
you'd rather wait for the video, I believe that on Friday, August 15, it
will be aired on Medici TV for FREE.)
Going back a little bit into the opera season
that has just ended, NPR is giving us an opportunity to hear the Los Angeles
Opera performance of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" which took
place in March of this year.
Going back a little further, there's a
performance of "Lakme" by Leo Delibes, this one having been performed
in Lausanne in October of last year.
Enjoy!
DAVE
P.S.: Somebody who calls himself Logan D has
uploaded quite a few opera videos, besides the recent Salzburg performance of
Mozart's "Don Giovanni."
The link below will take you to Part 1 of
Rossini's "William Tell" -- the June 28 performance from
Munich, complete with English subtitles:
In addition, there are recent performances of
Puccini's "La Boheme" (London), Rossini's "Il Turco in
Italia" & "La Gazzetta" & "Le Comte Ory" -- as
well as Catalani's "La Wally" (from Geneva), more Mozart ("Cosi
fan Tutte" & "Magic Flute"), Janacek's "Jenufa"
(from Berlin), Prokofiev's "War & Peace" etc. etc. (not all
with English subtitles, however)

WGBH Postpones its annual Labor Day Opera
Bash!
WGBH's annual Labor Day Opera Bash is missing
from its monthly printed schedule. A call to the station revealed that the reason for this
omission is that WGBH has changed its fiscal year so that they will now be
doing fund-raising during the Labor Day weekend. The Opera Bash has been
postponed to a later date in the autumn, probably October or November. We will
keep you posted on any developments. In the meantime, please write them a note,
encouraging them to make sure they broadcast the opera bash and more opera in
general. I'm told that every single letter is read and taken into
consideration. This is a link to their website:
