THE NEW YORK TIMES

Opera Star Fills Same Role for 2 Companies in a Week
By MICHAEL COOPER            MARCH 6, 2014

There is never a good time to lose your leading man to illness on the eve of opening night, particularly when the work in question is Alban Berg’s early-20th-century masterpiece “Wozzeck,” which is not exactly a staple of many singers’ repertoires.

But thanks to an incredibly rare fluke of scheduling — two of the world’s leading opera companies scheduled performances of “Wozzeck” in New York City within the space of a week — the Metropolitan Opera instantly was able to put its hands on a world-class Wozzeck after Thomas Hampson, a baritone, pulled out of Thursday night’s opening performance, citing bronchitis.

Matthias Goerne, the German baritone who sang the role last Friday with the Vienna State Opera in a concert version at Carnegie Hall, agreed to jump into the role Thursday night with only a couple of hours of rehearsal and just enough time to get fitted for a costume — and just one night after he sang a concert of “Die Schöne Müllerin,” Schubert’s song cycle, at Carnegie Hall.

As the third act neared its bloody end — Mr. Goerne’s character had just killed Marie, the mother of his child, sung by Deborah Voigt, and then drowned — he walked into the wings.

“Bravo!” Ms. Voigt whispered to her dazed, but pleased-looking colleague. “Congratulations.”

Then a stage manager quickly told him where to stand for the curtain calls.

He found his spot, and won a loud ovation from the audience and the conductor, James Levine, who had led Mr. Goerne in a rapid rehearsal of the piece on Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Goerne said that he was not sure how his voice would be after his Wednesday night concert, so he did not make the decision to go on in “Wozzeck” until Thursday. But once he did, he said, he did not find it too hard to jump into the role. “I’ve done it so many times — it’s not really complicated,” he said. “And I had fantastic colleagues.”

After the curtain went down, he was swarmed by colleagues cheering his unexpected performance. A smiling Peter Gelb, the Met’s general manager, shook his hand and joked: “Rehearsals aren’t necessary!”

Ms. Voigt summed up the feeling of much of the cast and crew as the night drew to a close.

“Never a dull moment,” she said.

Although “Wozzeck” has grown more popular in recent decades, having two major companies perform it in New York within a week is the opera world’s equivalent of a rare astronomical event.

The dueling Wozzecks spent time together: Mr. Hampson heard Mr. Goerne sing the role at Carnegie Hall on Friday, and Mr. Goerne went to see Mr. Hampson at Monday’s dress rehearsal.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

The opera schedule for this coming Saturday (March 15) is dominated by the LIVE performance from the Met of Massenet's "Werther" with tenor Jonas Kaufmann singing the title role. Some of us (it goes without saying) will be watching the HD-transmission in certain area movie theatres. Reports have been wildly enthusiastic about this one, so it's probably one that very few of us would want to miss.

As an alternative to the Massenet work, some listeners may opt to listen in to Swedish Radio as the LIVE performance from Stockholm features an all-time favorite: Mozart's "Don Giovanni." I might add that one shouldn't be fooled by the presence of unfamiliar Swedish singers in the cast, since Sweden DID, after all, give the opera world superstars like Birgit Nilsson and Jussi Bjoerling. (Some would add soprano Nina Stemme to that list as well.)

French Radio, on the other hand, is going with a work of George Frederick Handel: "Theodora." This is a performance that took place in Paris on February 10, 2014. Although this 1749 work is, strictly speaking, designated as an oratorio in 3 acts, opera lovers usually don't need to nit-pick, especially since both operas and oratorios (and other vocal works, for that matter) by Handel are not as frequently performed as those of Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, et al.

Then again, some of you may choose to kick-start your opera weekend by listening to Friday night's LIVE audio-stream, coming to us from the Met at 7:25 pm. It's the premiere performance this season of Bellini's "La Sonnambula" with soprano Diana Damrau as Amina.

Enjoy!
