On opening night of the 2008-09 Met season, Renee Fleming dazzled audiences when she sang the final scene of Strauss's wise and worldly meditation on art and life. Now she performs the entire work, in which the composer explores the essence of opera itself. Joseph Kaiser and Sarah Connolly also star with Andrew Davis conducting.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Most internet radio stations will be broadcasting the audio of this Saturday's HD-transmission of Borodin's "Prince Igor" (live from the Met). Anyone with even the slightest interest in 19th century Russian opera should take advantage of the opportunity to at least listen to this fairly infrequently performed score. And with the excellent bass-baritone Ildar Abdrazakov heading the cast, it's sure to be a vocal treat -- and hopefully a visual treat as well for all those opera fans who will be watching it at an area movie theatre.

The Met also has scheduled a LIVE performance this very evening at 7:25 on their free audio-stream. The opera tonight is "The Enchanted Island" (loosely based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest"), with the music having been written by a number of Baroque composers, both Handel and Vivaldi among them. A couple of the "familiar" voices on hand tonight would be those of mezzo Susan Graham and tenor/baritone Placido Domingo.

If you enjoyed the Met's HD-transmission of Rossini's "Le Comte Ory" a few seasons back, you might want to listen in to French Radio for a LIVE performance from Lyons of that very same work, but with different soloists.

And for more adventurous listeners, German Radio will be broadcasting the January 23, 2014 performance of the latest opera by Wilfried Hiller: "Der Flaschengeist" ("The Bottle Imp"), a work that is based on a tale by none other than Robert Louis Stevenson.

Enjoy!
