Many internet radio stations this Saturday (December 7)
will be carrying the first broadcast of the season from the Met, the opera
being Verdi's "Rigoletto" starring baritone Dimitri Hvorstovsky, and
with tenor Matthew Polenzani as the Duke.
Other internet radio stations, on the other hand, have scheduled
La Scala's opening night performance for broadcast. (This, of course, is
audio-only, although various movie theatres will be televising the
performance.) It's another popular Verdi opera, this one being "La
Traviata." The all-star cast includes soprano Diana Damrau as Violetta,
tenor Piotr Beczala as Alfredo, and baritone Zeljko Lucic as Germont.
Naturally, Verdi enthusiasts will be torn between this broadcast and the
"Rigoletto" broadcast listed above.
On the other hand, as we all know, not every single opera-goer
is a Verdi fanatic. Contemporary opera composer Philip Glass, for instance, has
his share of admirers as well, and so, it is with great pleasure, no doubt,
that his fans will be tuning in to Radio 4 (the Netherlands) to hear his latest
opera -- "The Perfect American" -- in its world premiere performance
which took place this past February 1 in Madrid. "The Perfect
American" of the title, incidentally, refers to none other than Walt
Disney (!!!), although the opera itself does not strictly adhere to factual
events in the man's life.
If "Rigoletto" and "Traviata" being
broadcast at the same time may be frustrating to many Verdi-lovers, there DOES
happen to be a FREE live audio-stream scheduled for this Friday evening
at 7:55, when the Met brings us this season's premiere performance of
"Falstaff" which, as many of you already know, is scheduled for a
LIVE HD-transmission the Saturday after this one (= December 14).
And, in case you missed an earlier FREE live audio-stream, the
Met is offering yet another performance of "Der Rosenkavalier" by
Richard Strauss, this one scheduled for Tuesday evening (December 10)
at 6:55.
Enjoy!

SILENT NIGHT - This opera recounts the true story of the World War I Christmas Eve truce. For one magical evening on December 24, 1914, French, German and British soldiers laid down their arms and joined in a spontaneous celebration reflecting the peace, fellowship and humanity of the season. Based on the Academy Award-nominated film Joyeux Noel, this two-act production was commissioned by the Minnesota Opera and premiered in November 2012 to national acclaim, including a Pulitzer Prize for Music for composer Kevin Puts. With a libretto by Mark Campbell, "Silent Night" is sung in French, English, German, Italian and Latin with English subtitles.
