WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Two operas, based on the works of William
Shakespeare, are to be broadcast this coming Saturday (September 7) on internet
radio.
The relatively rarely performed "Beatrice & Benedict" by Hector Berlioz can be heard on German Radio in a performance that took place in Vienna on May 4 of this year. Loosely based on the comedy "Much Ado About Nothing," this opera's scintillating overture is often heard in concerts throughout the world.(www.dradio.de/dkultur/)
Again,
rather loosely based on Shakespeare (in this case, it's "Romeo &
Juliet"), Bellini's opera "I Capuleti & i Montecchi"
("The Capulets & the Montagues") will be featured on NPR as part
of its ongoing series of operas that were performed last season by the San
Francisco Opera. The Bellini work in question had its performances in October
2012 and has Joyce Di Donato in the trouser role of Romeo. Ms Di Donato, as
many of you may recall, captivated audiences in noteworthy Met HD-transmissions
in Rossini's "Le Comte Ory" and (more recently) Donizetti's "Maria
Stuarda."
The
Obscure Opera of the Week definitely goes to Swedish Radio's offering this
Saturday: It's the 1899 opera "Fritjof's Saga" which was composed by
Elfrida Andree, who also happened to be an activist in the Swedish women's movement
in the latter part of the 19th century. "Fritjof's Saga" was
performed recently (June 15, 2013) in Karlstadt.
Enjoy!
