OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This coming Saturday (February 1), the "airwaves" on internet radio are dominated by the LIVE broadcast from the Met of Puccini's "Madame Butterfly." Opera fans who may have attended the HD-transmission last year of "The Trojans" (Berlioz) may be interested in listening to tenor Bryan Hymel's singing of the role of Pinkerton in this Saturday afternoon's broadcast.

With the Met soon to transmit a LIVE performance of Dvorak's "Rusalka" in area movie theatres next month, it's interesting to note that this same opera (but with different singers) will be broadcast on ORF in a performance taped last month from the Vienna State Opera. A LIVE video-stream of this work will also be available for viewing on the internet the day after the Met's HD-transmission -- which must certainly be one for the record-books: 2 videos of "Rusalka" on 2 consecutive days! (Can Dvorak's other operas be far behind?)

Fans of the operas of Richard Strauss, on the other hand, may be pleased to learn that his opera "Arabella" is being broadcast LIVE from Nuremberg on German Radio.

And for those of you who are in need of some delightful opera BEFORE this weekend, the Met is generously providing us with a FREE live audio-stream of tonight's performance of Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore."

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Many internet stations this Saturday (January 25) have scheduled the LIVE performance from the Met of Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore" with soprano Anna Netrebko reprising her role (Adina) which she performed in last season's HD-transmission. This time around, her tenor partner is Ramon Vargas, and her former partner in real life -- Erwin Schrott -- will be singing the role of Dulcamara.

Also from the Met, the season premiere of Dvorak's "Rusalka" can be heard tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 7:25 on their free LIVE audio-stream. Soprano Renee Fleming is scheduled to sing the title role for tomorrow night's performance, just as she is to be appearing in the upcoming HD-transmission of this opera on Saturday, February 8.

Of special interest to opera fans who enjoy works written much earlier than either of the above far more popular operas: Francesco Veracini's 3-act opera from 1735 -- "Adriano in Siria" -- can be heard on ORF, as performed in Vienna on January 18 of this year. This is actually the first performance of the work in nearly 300 years!

Also, pretty much along the same lines, it's time for Vivaldi's "Catone in Utica" (from 1737) to have its own unique broadcast on internet radio. To be heard on French radio, the performance in question was one that took place in Paris earlier this month (January 10).

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Several internet radio stations will be broadcasting the LIVE Met performance this Saturday (January 18) of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" with the same singers (Mariusz Kwiecien and Anna Netrebko) taking the leading roles, as they did in the HD-transmission which was shown in several local movie theaters earlier this season.

Other operas that can be heard on internet radio this Saturday include Verdi's "I Due Foscari" in a LIVE performance from Vienna. Placido Domingo takes on the role of the elder Foscari (a baritone role) in this particular broadcast.

Another Italian opera (of slightly earlier vintage) is Donizetti's "La Favorita" which Swedish Radio has scheduled. The performance being broadcast actually took place nearly a year ago in Paris (February 1, 2013) and stars mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the role of Leonora.

Going back even further in time to the year 1710, there's Handel's 3-act opera seria "Agrippina" which the Belgian station Klara is broadcasting, performances of this opera having taken place in Barcelona this past November.

One more LIVE broadcast (this one from Paris) worth mentioning comes to us via French Radio, as a relatively rare opportunity presents itself to hear "Lakme" by Leo Delibes which, as many of you probably know, features the Bell Song as one of its many highlights.
