OPERA ON THE INTERNET

WITH

DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Some excellent "late" Verdi turns up on the opera schedule for this coming Saturday (June 30), namely "Aida" & "Falstaff."

The "Aida" performance is one that took place this past January and is a continuation of the cycle of Lyric Opera of Chicago radio broadcasts being aired by NPR. Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky sings the role of Aida, partnered with Marcello Giordani as Radames. Both singers are veterans of fairly recent Met HD-transmissions, with Ms Radvanovsky having appeared singing the role of Leonora in last season's "Trovatore" & Giordani recently starring in "Ernani" (televised last Sunday on Channel 2).

London's Royal Opera House is the company serving us the other Verdi offering: "Falstaff" with an excellent ensemble cast working to bring this comic masterpiece to life.

Speaking of masterpieces, "Lucia di Lammermoor" (Donizetti) will be heard in a LIVE performance on ORF, direct from the Vienna State Opera. Tenor Piotr Beczala -- recently seen at the Met as Des Grieux opposite Anna Netrebko in Massenet's "Manon" -- sings the tenor role of Edgardo. Soprano Diana Damrau, originally slated to sing the title role, is being replaced by Brenda Rae, according to the latest information I have at hand.

For this week's obscure opera, there's Czech composer Zdenek Fibich's "Sarka" in a performance from Braunschweig that took place on March 22 of this year. Traditional-minded opera-lovers may rest assured that Fibich's opera, premiering in the 1890s, is suitably melodic and dramatic in a style reminiscent of Dvorak's nearly contemporaneous opera "Rusalka."

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET

WITH

DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Rather slim pickings this coming Saturday (June 23), with several internet radio stations simply airing repeat broadcasts from this past season.

BBC Radio 3, however, having devoted much of their schedule to the Met's live broadcasts, is now playing "catch-up" by providing us with broadcasts of performances from London's Royal Opera House. And so, this week we get to hear their production from last January of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" with Erwin Schrott (married to Anna Netrebko, by the way) singing the title role.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago's run of performances last February of Handel's "Rinaldo" (one of the earliest of his best-known operas) gets to be featured on NPR. Countertenor David Daniels is heard in the title role.

A couple of operas of Giuseppe Verdi may also be heard this Saturday: "Il Trovatore" & "Falstaff" --

The Belgian station Klara is broadcasting a performance from Brussels of "Trovatore" with soprano Marina Poplavskaya singing the role of Leonora. Having watched the video of this particular production, I can honestly say that VOCALLY it's quite impressive, i.e. you'd be better off listening to it, rather than watching the bizarre behavior the director has asked his singers to exhibit (!!!). (Azucena, all dolled up and smoking a cigarette, is on-stage throughout the entire opera, for example.)

The other Verdi work ("Falstaff") may be heard on French Radio. The performance itself is another Royal Opera House feature (May 28, 2012) with an excellent cast of (mostly) unknown singers. Worth checking out!

Enjoy!
