Benjamin Britten
WAR REQUIEM  —

War, Pity of War, Pacifism
The 1930s in Britain was not an easy time or place for a committed pacifist. Germany was arming; peace seemed an unlikely proposition. Yet Benjamin Britten’s abhorrence of violence was deeply seated and of long standing. He sought conscientious objector status in 1942, then continued “the work I’m most qualified to do” — composing, performing, and, at war’s end, mounting concerts with Yehudi Menuhin at the liberated Bergen–Belsen concentration camp. As England’s premier composer, Britten was commissioned to write a requiem for the Coventry Cathedral reconsecration in May 1962. His treatment of war, tempered by the poetry of Wilfred Owen, two world wars, and the Cold War gloom of nuclear arms, was not celebratory. “When you hear Britten’s music — if you really hear it, not just listen to it superficially,” said Leonard Bernstein, “you become aware of something very dark. There are gears that are grinding and not quite meshing. And they make a great pain. It was a difficult and lonely time.”

3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2012, Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence

OPERA ON THE INTERNET

WITH

DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This coming Saturday (March 3), many internet radio stations will be airing the LIVE performance from the Met of Verdi's "Aida" with Violeta Urmana as Aida, Marcelo Alvarez as Radames, and Stephanie Blythe as Amneris -- all "veterans" of past HD-transmissions that the Met has offered over the past several years.

Of interest to fans of Russian opera, Rimsky-Korsakov's penultimate opera is on hand, coming to us via Radio 4 in a 3/1/12 performance from Amsterdam. The opera in question: "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia" (there's a nice long title for you!), or as those of you who have a special fondness for this opera (and you know who you are) call it: "Kitezh."

French Radio, on the other hand, has a double-bill of 2 one-acters that were recently performed in Lyons (1/29/12): Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi" and the less familiar "A Florentine Tragedy" by Zemlinsky, who was Arnold Schoenberg's brother-in-law and a man who was in love with Gustav Mahler's wife Alma, a couple of items that may be of some interest to opera-trivia buffs.

Then, on Monday, March 5, the Met has a free LIVE audio-stream scheduled at 7:30, as Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore" will be broadcast with Diana Damrau and Juan Diego Florez as Adina and Nemorino, respectively. Sounds super!

Enjoy!

THOMAS HAMPSON
Heart of a Soldier

What makes a hero? The question was never an academic one for Rick Rescorla, a British-born adventurer who fought in Vietnam before settling in New York as head of security for a brokerage firm based in the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001, his extraordinary courage and calmness in a crisis paid off: Rescorla led all of the 2,700 people under his care to safety—literally singing them down the stairs—before heading back into the burning building for one last check. He never emerged.

Thomas Hampson, William Burden, Melody Moore, Nadine Sierra, Henry Phipps, Mohannad Mchallah, Michael Sumuel, Susannah Biller, Sara Gartland, Maya Lahyani, Ta’u Pupu’a, Daniel Snyder, Trevor Scheunemann and Wayne Tigges; directed by Francesca Zambello; conducted by Patrick Summers. Recorded Fall 2010, War Memorial Opera House.
