Gioachino Rossini’s La Cenerentola is perhaps the most famous operatic version of the Cinderella story, and it is like no other interpretation. This opera has no fairy godmother, no pumpkin that turns into a carriage, and no glass slipper. However, unlike most other operas, it has a happy ending. Elina Garanca sings the title role, with Lawrence Brownlee as Prince Charming.

Soprano Patricia Racette stars as Cio-Cio-San, the young geisha who chooses to die honorably, rather than suffer in shame after learning of her husband’s betrayal, with tenor Marcello Giordani as Pinkerton, Maria Zifchak as Suzuki and Dwayne Croft as Sharpless.

The feature-length documentary takes viewers behind the scenes at the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions, where each year thousands of hopefuls compete for a cash prize, the chance to sing on the Met stage and the opportunity to launch a major operatic career. The film covers the dramatic week leading up to the finals of the 2007 auditions, focusing on three tenor contestants. "The Audition" is both a suspenseful competition narrative and a revealing backstage look at what it takes to make it as an opera singer.

It seems that, with the 2011/2012 yet to begin, it's a case of rather slim pickings on internet radio, at least for this coming Saturday, September 3, with many stations merely offering repeats of earlier radio broadcasts. The Austrian radio network (ORF), for example, is giving listeners another chance to sample the April 2011 performance from London's Royal Opera House of Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Tsar's Bride" which features Marina Poplavskaya (Elisabeth in the Met's "Don Carlo" from last December) and mezzo Ekaterina Gubanova who will be appearing next month in the Met's HD-transmission of Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" opposite Anna Netrebko.

The Belgian station KLARA will be broadcasting performances from a few years back of 2 contemporary works by Belgian composers: "Aquarius" -- a 1993 opera by Goeyvaerts, and "L'Uomo del Fiore in Bocca" by Brewaeys, a work which originally appeared in 2006.

Going all the way back to June 2009 (is that really over 2 years ago?), NPR is featuring a broadcast of George Gershwin's 20th-century classic "Porgy & Bess" in a San Francisco Opera performance with Eric Owens singing the role of Porgy. Owens, as some of you may recall, sang the role of Alberich in the Met's HD-transmission last fall of Wagner's "Das Rheingold.
