OPERA ON THE INTERNET WITH DAVE D'AGUANNO

Lots of interesting items on tap for this Saturday (Nov. 27) on Internet Radio:
Among the better-known operas, there's a performance from last February of Verdi's "Otello" to be aired on Canada's CBC, as done by the Canadian Opera Company. (At 1 p.m.)

Also at 1 o'clock, Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands) as performed this month by the Reisopera. (A different cast altogether from that shown in the recent Met HD-transmission of this opera, naturally.)

Then at 1:30, you can sit back & listen to yet another "Don Giovanni" (Mozart) as performed by the English National Opera on BBC Radio 3.

And at 2 o'clock, an all-Swedish cast tackles Verdi's monumental "Don Carlo" (LIVE from Goteborg, Sweden).

For all you MODERN OPERA enthusiasts, the world premiere performance from Philadelphia of Margaret Garwood's new opera "The Scarlet Letter" will be broadcast on WRTI. It's based on the well-known novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne (naturally!!!).

Then, for our OBSCURE OPERA of the WEEK: Mercadante's tragic "Virginia" gets a rare outing on German Radio, in a performance from last month's Wexford Festival. If you like Verdi and/or Donizetti, this one should be right up your alley! (at 1 p.m.)

From the ARCHIVES: ORF is broadcasting a wonderful performance of Bellini's "La Sonnambula" with Joan Sutherland singing the soprano role, in a performance that was done at the Met on March 30, 1963. (starts at 1:30)

Finally -- on Tuesday, November 30, at 8 p.m. -- the Met is giving us another LIVE performance of Bizet's "Carmen" with the incomparable Elina Garanca in the title role.

In the meantime -- Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET WITH DAVE D'AGUANNO
New York's Metropolitan Opera continues its series of free LIVE audio streams with 2 Verdi masterworks:

This Friday evening at 8 p.m., you can listen to "Il Trovatore" with Patricia Racette singing the role of Leonora.
Then, next Monday at 7 p.m., you can catch a sort of preview of an upcoming Met HD-Transmission, when the Met airs "Don Carlo" with pretty much the same cast that will be seen in movie theaters next month.

On Saturday, November 20, 2 Handel operas will be featured on internet radio:

There's English National Opera's performance of last month's "Radamisto" which can be heard on BBC 3 at 1:30.
Or you could try the LIVE performance of "Alcina" (Vienna State Opera) being broadcast on ORF (also at 1:30).

Other than those Handel offerings, what better way to kick off Saturday's opera listening, than with a classic performance of Verdi's "Rigoletto" with a cast featuring Luciano Pavarotti & Joan Sutherland? Baritone Sherrill Milnes sings the leading role in that memorable 1971 recording which can be heard at 1 o'clock on WRTI.

1 o'clock also marks the start of CBC Radio's broadcast of Bizet's "Carmen" in a January 2010 performance from the Canadian Opera Company's past season.

Also at 1 p.m., there's Donizetti's "Roberto Devereux" coming to us from the Rome Opera's October 1st performance (on German radio).

For something a bit more radical than Donizetti, the Netherlands Opera is broadcasting a performance from Amsterdam of their recent "Soldaten" - Zimmermann's 1965 opera -- on Radio 4.

At 1:45, if you'd rather satisfy your longing for Wagner, there's "Tristan & Isolde" in a LIVE performance from Copenhagen.

Again -- Something for everyone, it would seem!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET WITH DAVE D'AGUANNO

For those of you who may not be attending this Saturday's live HD-transmission from the Met of Donizetti's comic masterpiece "Don Pasquale" (featuring Anna Netrebko), you won't have to miss out on your weekly/daily opera fix, as there's plenty to be heard on internet radio this weekend.

Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman" turns up TWICE on Saturday's schedule.
One is a LIVE performance from Berlin, starting at 1 p.m. (www.dradio.de/dkultur/)
The other one derives from a performance last April from the Canadian Opera Company (also at 1 p.m.)

At the same time, WRTI is broadcasting the Houston Grand Opera's take on Britten's "The Turn of the Screw" from a performance this past January.

At 1:30, BBC Radio 3 is bringing us a performance from last month of "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss, from the Welsh National Opera.

If you'd rather listen to some Mozart, you have two choices:
At 1:30, there's a performance from Vienna of his rarely heard "La Finta Giardiniera" (delayed broadcast of this Friday's performance)  (http://oe1.orf.at/)
Or you might want to tune in to Belgium's Klara radio station for the Flemish National Opera's October 10th performance of "The Abduction from the Seraglio."

Happy Listening!
